**The Opportunity**
The Head of Legal Operations will lead and manage the operational aspects of the in-house legal department, overseeing the strategy, processes, technology, and resources required to optimize legal service delivery. This individual will work closely with senior legal leadership to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure that the legal team is equipped to meet the organization’s evolving needs. The role requires a combination of operational acumen and strong leadership to drive continuous improvement and foster innovation within the legal function.
**The Team**
**Black & Veatch’s Business Enablement** consists of critical groups that help enable the organizations people, projects, and businesses to be as successful as possible. Functions in this group include Digital & Information Technology, Global Finance, Global Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and Government Affairs and Real Estate and Building Services.
**Key Responsibilities**
+ Help develop, refine and promote the legal department’s mission, and develop and execute on the department’s short and long-term operations plan
+ Provide creative thinking to help identify and develop cutting-edge strategies for increasing value and reducing outside legal spend, while maintaining excellent legal representation and optimizing engagement practices with our law firms
+ Manage other plans or initiatives to make the legal department more efficient, as delegated by the General Counsel
+ Design, implement, and optimize legal department workflows, processes, and best practices to enhance efficiency and productivity while maintaining high-quality legal services.
+ Lead the selection, implementation, and management of legal technology and software tools, including contract management systems, e-billing platforms, and document management systems, ensuring they meet the department’s needs.
+ Oversee the legal department’s budget, manage outside counsel spend, and explore alternative billing arrangements to reduce costs while maintaining high standards of legal service.
+ Create metrics and monitor progress to measure success against plans
+ Benchmark both internally and externally to stay on top of current trends and best practices
+ Lead initiatives aimed at transforming and modernizing the legal department, embracing innovation, and championing change within the team.
+ Perform special projects and responsibilities assigned by the General Counsel
**Management Responsibilities**
Acts in capacity of a "lead person." Does not have management responsibility for the people to whom they provide work direction.
**Preferred Qualifications**
**Desired Skills**
+ Certification or formal training in Legal Operations (e.g., from the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium - CLOC).
+ Experience in a global, multi-jurisdictional legal environment.
+ Knowledge of current trends in legal technology and legal service delivery models.
+ Proven negotiation skills with senior partner level outside counsel attorneys and pricing directors of law firms.
+ Demonstrated track record of influencing senior level stakeholders (both internal and external)
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong ability to communicate concisely with a wide variety of audiences, including senior management and key external stakeholders and proven ability to engage, influence and align stakeholders
+ Demonstrated ability to build and lead a complex function; success managing, leading and coaching others in a large, global organization in order to achieve objectives; and execute projects
+ Capacity to think strategically to identify issues and develop long-term solutions
+ Demonstrated project management skills
**Tools, Technology and Process Management**
+ Identify and implement process improvements and solutions around department
+ organizational structure, systems, technologies and controls.
+ Define centralized resources that are well maintained and accurate.
+ Evaluate, test, train, implement and support technology solutions interfacing with IT.
+ Manage and oversee vendors.
+ Support and manage various ad hoc projects within the department as they arise
**Budget Management**
+ Oversee and manage the department budget in partnership with Finance.
+ Define metrics for increased visibility and insight into budget performance.
**Hiring, Recruiting and Outreach**
+ Coordinate headcount planning and assist with recruiting efforts.
+ Develop and manage department onboarding and new attorney training, oversee the department’s community support and outreach, including relationships with local pro bono organizations.
+ Coordinate Legal internship program.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Bachelor’s degree in law, business, or a related field
+ 8+ years of experience in legal operations, legal project management, or a related field, preferably in an in-house legal environment.
+ Proven experience in managing legal technology, vendor relationships, and process optimization within a legal department.
+ Technology-savvy; proficient in all Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel; expertise with eBilling software
+ Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and cost control strategies.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
+ High level of proficiency with legal technology tools, including e-billing, contract lifecycle management, and matter management software.
+ Strong leadership skills with a track record of building and leading high-performance teams.
+ A strategic thinker who can drive change, innovation, and efficiency while maintaining a focus on delivering high-quality legal services.
**Work Environment/Physical Demands**
+ Typical office environment with a hybrid work schedule: 3 days in office and 2 days remote
+ Sitting, walking, talking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing for extended periods of time, lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.
