ABOUT THE ROLE

The Head of Business Development for the Fintech Division leads the strategy, execution, and expansion of strategic partnerships, revenue opportunities, and market positioning for the financial institution’s fintech products and services. This leader is responsible for identifying, negotiating, and cultivating key relationships with technology providers, financial platforms, startups, and enterprise clients to drive innovation and revenue growth.

As a senior leader within the fintech arm of the institution, this role combines commercial acumen, deep fintech knowledge, and leadership capabilities to scale go-to-market initiatives, develop ecosystem partnerships, and position the fintech division as a competitive, tech-forward force in the financial services industry.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Strategic Planning & Growth Execution

Develop and lead the overall business development strategy for the fintech division in alignment with the institution’s innovation roadmap and revenue goals. Identify and evaluate new market opportunities, including emerging technologies (e.g., embedded finance, blockchain, API banking, digital lending, AI/ML solutions). Define key KPIs and targets related to revenue generation, partnerships, and strategic growth; track and report on performance. 

Strategic Partnerships & Ecosystem Development

Source, negotiate, and structure partnerships with fintech companies, technology vendors, financial institutions, and other ecosystem players. Cultivate relationships with venture capital firms, accelerators, and startups to identify early-stage collaboration opportunities. Lead joint venture, co-development, and strategic investment discussions when appropriate. Manage the business development cycle, demonstrating accountability and expediency with both internal and external stakeholders.

Client Acquisition & Commercialization

Develop and execute go-to-market strategies for fintech solutions including digital banking platforms, BaaS (Banking-as-a-Service), payment APIs, and lending-as-a-service products. Lead enterprise sales and partnership teams to onboard strategic clients and grow user adoption across verticals (e.g., SMBs, startups, e-commerce, healthcare). Collaborate with product, marketing, and legal teams to ensure readiness for product launches and commercial scaling.

Market Intelligence & Competitive Positioning

Maintain deep knowledge of fintech market dynamics, competitor offerings, regulatory shifts, and consumer trends. Deliver insights to product and executive teams to influence roadmap and innovation strategy. Represent the fintech division at industry events, panels, and conferences to promote thought leadership and brand visibility.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Team Management

Build, lead, and develop a high-performing business development team, including partnership managers, solution consultants, and account executives. Foster collaboration across teams including product, technology, risk, compliance, and marketing to align business development efforts with broader company objectives. Instill a data-driven, customer-centric, and agile culture within the team.

KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

Strong commercial instincts with a strategic, growth-oriented mindset. Deep understanding of fintech ecosystems, including key technologies, business models, and trends. Excellent negotiation, presentation, and stakeholder management skills. Strong analytical, financial modeling, and deal evaluation capabilities. High level of initiative, self-direction, and ownership in fast-paced environments. Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work effectively in matrixed organizations.

Open banking and API monetization models Digital wallets, payments, and embedded finance Lending technologies and alternative credit models Cloud-native platforms and digital onboarding Data privacy, banking compliance, and regulatory technology (RegTech)

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Technology, Economics, or related field is required. MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.

Experience:

12–15 years of progressive experience in business development, partnerships, or corporate development, ideally within fintech, financial services, or technology sectors. Proven experience developing partnerships or driving B2B sales in a fintech context (e.g., API platforms, SaaS for financial services, digital banking, payments). Track record of leading deals from sourcing to closing, including commercial structuring and legal negotiations. Experience in a regulated financial services environment or in collaborating with compliance and legal teams on go-to-market strategies.
