H2Se Systems Operator Trainee

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Accountable for the safe operation of H2Se (Hydrogen Selenide) production equipment and support systems and safe handling and storage of all H2Se inventory, including residual (tails) H2Se returned from the ZnSe growth process as part of hands-on training. Responsible for proper testing, inspections, and maintenance of process piping manifolds and gas cylinder valves and regular testing of support and safety systems, including facility checks and reporting, as supervised during training period. Hands-on training includes accountability for meeting all H2Se production to established quality specifications. Successfully completes all parts of the established 12–18-month training program and achieves satisfactory test results. Responsible to perform tasks without supervision once training requirements for that task have been met. Accountable for the strict adherence to established procedures, policies and protocols is required to reduce the risk of accidental release and exposure of a highly toxic material. Learns to efficiently conduct operations according to established procedures, including participation in Process Safety Management (PSM) process to maintain compliance with both OSHA PSM and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) standards, as well as DEP standards for safe handling and storage of hazardous waste

Education & Experience

High school graduate or equivalent required. 1 to 3 years of manufacturing experience preferred.

Skills

Moderate mechanical aptitude is required for process connections and system maintenance. Safe operation of process equipment requires a general understanding of pressure and fluid flow with the ability to evaluate process conditions to troubleshoot and correct minor process issues. Must be able to communicate effectively with department management, maintenance, and trained H2Se operators/leads to address training needs, to support successful training and testing. Process operation, tracking, data entry and reporting requires moderate computer skills/efficiency. Must be able to understand and meet the MPZ schedule, performance and operating requirements and demands. This position is required to be a member of the Saxonburg Site Emergency Response Team (ERT), including successful completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER Technician Level training and meeting all continuing education requirements to stay active as a member of ERT. Must learn to perform all aspects of a system operator safely and completely. Ability to model, lead, motivate, and influence effectively using I CARE values (Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Enthusiasm). Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or protected individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Working Conditions

Multiple-shift rotation to support a 24/5 operation. Involves the handling and storage of toxic substances requiring significant attention to detail. Regular exposure to dust, fumes, heat, noise and cold Respirator, supplied air and SCBA use required. 

Physical Requirements

Standing or sitting up to 12 hours per day Lifting (Medium Work – Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally) Pushing/Pulling (Medium Work – Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally) Must be able to climb, bend, reach, push and pull regularly. Must be able to work on elevated surfaces such as ladders or mechanical lifts. Must be able to wear required equipment during the performance of specified production and maintenance operations, as well as incident response. Must be able to function mentally and physically while wearing safety equipment for extended periods. Ability to participate as an active member of the site Emergency Response Team is required.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and COHERENT Corporate EHS standards.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements:

Must be able to wear proper PPE including safety glasses, goggle, splash shields, steel toe/metatarsal shoes, long pants, sleeved uniform, and hearing protection. Must be able to wear dust mask, respirator, or supplied air for extended periods.

Pre-employment and annual screening requirements:

PFT + respirator Pre-employment physical. PFT + respirator annual physicals (Emergency Response Team)

Quality and Environmental Responsibilities

Due to inventory quantities of some highly hazardous materials, MPZ is covered by OSHA standard for Process Safety Management, as well as EPA’s Risk Management program.  All MPZ personnel are required to understand the importance of following all operating procedures to maintain regulatory compliance with these programs.

Due to classification of several process waste streams, DEP standards for Hazardous Waste handling and storage must be followed to ensure regulatory compliance.

Coherent meets the ISO 9001 quality standards. MPZ employees must understand and follow all applicable Quality Assurance policies and participate in audits to maintain ISO 9001 certification.

Failure to follow operating procedures could result in a release of hazardous materials, impacting employees and the environment.
