**Course Description**
The themes of race and ethnicity are central to the current course offerings in the Program in American Culture. In this course, students will examine the specific ways that Arab Americans engage with race. It provides a historical overview of Arab Americans and race in relation to a series of other identity markers, such as class, gender, sexuality, religion, and nation. This course fits particularly within the Program in American Culture?s focus on transnational and diasporic considerations of race.
This course is an introductory survey to Arab-American studies. It will explore many questions such as the following in an interdisciplinary context, focusing on anthropological, historical, literary, and visual materials.
+ What are the historical circumstances that have shaped Arab immigration to the U.S.?
+ Where do Arab Americans "fit" within America?s racial classification system?
+ What is anti-Arab racism?
+ How has it shifted throughout Arab American history?
+ What is the significance of gender and sexuality to anti-Arab racism?
+ How did September 11th impact Arab American communities?
+ What are the cultural forms that Arab immigrants have inherited from their homelands and reproduced in this country?
+ In what ways are these cultural forms gendered?
+ What is the relationship between socioeconomic class and cultural identity among Arab Americans?
+ How have Arab Americans used the arts for cultural and political expression?
+ What is the significance of religious affiliation to Arab American identity formation?
+ How has U.S. foreign policy impacted Arab American histories and experiences?
**Responsibilities***
**Major duties and hourly work expectation per week** : Attend lecture, meet with instructor weekly, maintain attendance record and gradebook, prepare and teach two (1 hour) discussion sections, and evaluate student work.
**Required Qualifications***
**Critical skills and experience:** Substantial knowledge of Arab-American Studies and/or race and ethnic studies such that you can effectively discuss, teach, and evaluate a wide range of undergraduate students.
To be appointed as a GSI or GSSA, a graduate student must be in good standing in their degree program and for Terms I and II, must be registered for not less than six (6) credit hours. With written approval of the student's faculty advisor, five (5) credit hours may be acceptable.
**Desired Qualifications***
Knowledge of Arab-American Studies and/or race studies.
LSA student enrolled in a graduate program.
**Modes of Work**
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. **Decision Making Process**
All applications will be forwarded to American Culture's Director of Graduate Studies for final selection and approval. Once the recommendation is reviewed, an offer letter will be authorized. Final decisions will be made by late August.
**Selection Process**
Criteria for GSI Selection: 1) Enrollment demand, 2) GSI stated preference, 3) Faculty preference, 4) Relevant experience, 5) External applicants only if unfilled by American Culture GSI.
