Genesee Lake School, a MyPath Company, operates Homegrown Farms to provide fresh produce for our kitchens and group homes while teaching students about sustainable farming and environmental stewardship.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated Growing Assistant to support outdoor crop production and controlled environment systems such as hydroponics and aquaponics. This position plays a key role in maintaining healthy plants, fish, and systems while assisting the Farm Operations team in both outdoor and greenhouse settings. Ideal candidates are hands-on, enjoy physical work, and have a passion for sustainable agriculture and student engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Outdoor Field Production

Assist with planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, pruning, trellising, and harvesting crops.Operate and maintain basic field tools and equipment safely.Wash, sort, and pack produce for delivery to kitchens and group homes.Drive company vehicle for deliveries.

Controlled Environment Production (Greenhouse)

Support hydroponic and aquaponic systems, including testing water quality, adjusting nutrients, seeding crops, and pruning/trellising plants.Monitor and care for fish populations, including feeding, health checks, and water quality maintenance.Maintain greenhouse cleanliness, compost organic material, and assist with light repairs.

Team and Culture

Work closely with Farm Operations Coordinator and Controlled Environmental Agriculturalist to meet production goals.Communicate concerns or observations regarding crop, system, or equipment issues.Model positive and respectful behavior for students and staff, promoting a safe and supportive work environment.

Schedule

Full-time, year-round positionMay–October: Primary location outdoors with some greenhouse support.November–April: Primary location in the greenhouse with some outdoor support.Flexibility required to meet operational needs and seasonal demands.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or GED requiredExperience in gardening, farming, landscaping, or greenhouse work preferred.Knowledge of organic growing systems, pests, or diseases a plus.

Required Skills & Attributes:

Ability to perform basic math for nutrient mixing and measurements.Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions.Ability to work independently and collaboratively.Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, kneel, stand, and work outdoors.

Additional Requirements:

Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License preferred with acceptable driving record.Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and with plants, soil, fish, insects, and farm equipment.

Working Conditions

Fast-paced and changing work environment.Outdoor and greenhouse settings depending on season.Exposure to weather, agricultural equipment, fertilizers, pests, and water systems.Hands-on, physical work including lifting, bending, kneeling, and extended standing.
