Grounds Superintendent
Overview This full-time year-round position is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of grounds and snow removal. The Grounds Superintendent will actively lead and work alongside the team while also planning the scope of projects, fulfilling action plans to achieve goals, maintaining, and continually growing an advanced knowledge of horticultural, grounds maintenance, and safety practices. Responsibilities The Grounds Superintendent typical job functions include: Operational: Accountable for the department goals while contributing to the overall division, resort, and corporate goals/initiatives. Provide leadership in the daily operations of base operations teams. Active leader of the resort grounds operations including planting of flower beds and pots, shrubs, and trees, as well as subsequent care and fertilizing of such species including performing pest control, weeding and dead heading in flower beds. Coordinate and implement the action plans for the following: general lawn work; (mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, clean up, etc.), grounds preparation, support of special events at the resort, annual flower bed layouts and design, snow removal plans for winter operations, and road maintenance and repair. Ensure all parking areas, walkways and drives are clean and free of debris daily, including grass clippings, leaves, litter and similar. Communicate with vendors on procuring operational supplies including requesting quotes, completing purchase approval and coordinating delivery. Represent the Grounds department in leadership meetings as needed and regularly collaborate with multiple departments on topics including but not limited to resort grounds projects, events setup, and equipment maintenance. Coordinate the operation and scheduling of the irrigation system with the Irrigation Technician. Comprehend and maintain a current file/library of labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on all products used in the department. Maintain and continue education of appropriate understanding of normal agronomic and grounds maintenance practices as dictated by soil, water, and tissue tests. Have advanced knowledge of horticultural best practices with the ability to identify turf grass weeds, insects and disease symptoms and characteristics and understand the proper treatment. Maintain knowledge and understanding of all application products, including fertilizers, pesticides, and soil amendments. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including MIOSHA, EGLE, EAP, and similar. Provide superior service to all customers (internal and external). Supervisory: Direct oversight of the grounds & snow removal teams. Up to 20 team members on a year-round basis. Hire, supervise and train your team through providing guidance, training, support, and accountability. Understand and implement the appropriate safety standards and educate the team of the standards through designing, training, and enforcing safety policies. Accountable for team members in maintaining a safe work environment and high-quality work standards. Leadership: Long-Term Thinking create and implement policies, procedures, and plans to proactively improve the resort grounds as well as the team members, mitigate risk of all, and provide a safe working environment. Ensure Excellence in Execution by leading the team, organizing the operations of grounds and snow removal ensuring standards are met or exceeded; and being accountable for the team goals while contributing to the overall resort and corporate goals/initiatives. Qualifications Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Driver's License and ability to pass motor vehicle records check. Sprayer's license covering all resort areas including waterways. OSHA 40-hour general industry certification within 12-months of hire. Other Requirements Proficient with computers including Microsoft Suite and the ability to learn other technology. Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English). Passionate about the outdoors, hospitality or winter sports. Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, with varying hours based on season.
