Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a new employee at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania to assist in various departments as needed by plant production. The Company’s regulatory, engineering and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Pay range of $24.25-$25.25, with an additional $1.50 per hour when working 3rd shift. Training for this position will take place on 1st shift (4:00am-12:30pm). You will perform a variety of work and utilize various equipment and technology including air arc cutting torches, grinding tools, I Pads, etc.  Primary Job FunctionsBelow is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.Prepares the interior or exterior surface of the tank or hopper car for coating or lining by removing rust, weld slag, scale or other foreign contaminants.Uses safety approved air gun to remove grit and dust after blasting. Removes all protective coverings, blows trucks and other car parts clean and inspects the car to ensure that it has not been damaged.Removes all weld splatter, laminations, and sharp edges from inside tank/hopper cars by grinding. Grinds girth weld level on floor when repaired.Vacuums complete interior of tank/hopper car. Foils and tapes all stainless steel inside tank car as required.Uses a variety of tools and equipment.Acts as a safety watch for tank/hopper car entry.Maintains area in a neat and orderly manner and reports work hazards.Knowledge and Skills RequiredHave a high school diploma or GEDMust be able to demonstrate job related knowledge of measuring devices such as rules.Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of weight volume, and other units of measurements.Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts, including overtimeMust be able to work any shift Environmental ConditionsExposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.Work outdoors often and be exposed to the elements.Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices. Ability to lift 50 pounds.Moderate physical exertion is required. Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.Manual dexterity in operating control levers and buttons.Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises.
