Govt. Natural Resources - Division Director (Hybrid Work Options) - Closing Date: 08/12/25

The Division Director, under the direction of the Executive Director, is responsible for the overall planning, directing, controlling, and coordination of all administrative and operational functions of the Natural Resources Division.  The Director develops, implements, and directs strategic objectives as they pertain to workforce systems, policies, performance, and development in accordance with Sault Ste. Marie Tribe’s overall strategic goals and objectives.                                                               

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

Develops and implements an annual Natural Resources and Organizational Development strategic plan that will lead to the effective administration of the Division and provide direct and ongoing support to all departments under their supervision. Develops and implements strategic plans, goals and objectives for the Division.                             Drafts Division policies for Board of Directors’ approval and develops administrative procedures to ensure policies are implemented in a consistent manner.                              Administers new and existing grants and contracts. Manages all budgetary responsibilities as they pertain to the Natural Resources division. Ensures the Division operates in compliance with all laws, regulations, policies and procedures of the Sault Tribe and all other funding sources.                                                                              Prepares and submits all required reports in a timely manner. Develops and monitors all personnel management activities, human resource processes, job restructuring, corrective action plans, disciplinary actions as well as team member awards and acknowledgements.    Provides leadership and direction for data analysis and collection for developing the strategic planning process. Provides direction, leadership, expertise, knowledge and insight to team members Provides Board of Directors with information of national resource policy, trends, and position guidelines for our elected leaders. Provides educational and training opportunities for team members.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

·         Attends and/or participates in all required meetings.

·     Oversees special projects, added new services, contract negotiations, building needs and repair funding.

·    Oversees all Natural Resources Division matters and/or issues within the Tribal Communities and prepares recommendations for Tribal Board approval. 

·         All other job-related duties as assigned.

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, Executives, Board of Directors, customers, outside vendors/service providers. State and Federal Agencies, non-governmental institutions, universities and other collaborative organizations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Limited overnight travel may be required from time to time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions. There may be prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with the community, visitors, employees, and vendors. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must be able to handle frequent interruptions and must also multi-task and interact with a wider variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management or related field required or 8 years demonstrated ability in related work experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Master’s or PhD in Natural Resource Management or related field preferred.

Experience:  Minimum 8 years Natural Resources or related program management experience and a minimum of 7 years supervisory experience is required in addition to the above-stated education requirements. Experience with federal grants and contracts preferred.

Certification/License:  Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have good project management and organizational skills. Must have experience managing departmental budgets. Must have excellent communication skills. Must be capable of public speaking and facilitating formal and informal meetings. Must have strong leadership, management, team building, and interpersonal skills. Must have knowledge of standard office systems and general office equipment. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, etc.), internet software and appropriate storage of electronic files. Must adhere to professional and ethical behavior standards and comply with Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians company policies and procedures. Must maintain privacy and confidentiality. Native American preferred.
