Characteristic Duties:

Collect and evaluate patient medical history, constructing a pedigree using appropriate nomenclature.Perform comprehensive genetic risk assessment and explain specifics regarding natural history of   diagnosis, genetic factors, and available testing options. Facilitate testing when indicated.Interpret genetic test results and communicate them to patients and other healthcare professionals.Provide psychosocial assessment and counseling.Appropriately document all clinical encounters.Perform case preparation and follow-up.Effectively triage new referrals.Consent patients for participation in relevant registries based on their genetic testing status.Provide clinical onboarding, mentorship and education to other genetic counselors and health care professionals.Recognize and address key clinical factors that suggest genetic risk beyond chief complaint.Serve as content expert for referring providers.Take proactive steps to assure continuity of care within the clinical unit.Develop/implement protocols for the integration of emerging technologies that may affect clinical care.Design and implement plans for improvement in the clinic.Perform other related duties as assignedRequired Qualifications*Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Certification as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Medical Genetics .Licensed, or able to be licensed, as a Genetic Counselor by the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory AffairsDemonstrate ability to provide independent, advanced genetic counseling services, including test coordination, and ordering, test interpretation, patient education, family risk assessment and cascade testing.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and diverse patient populations.Desired Qualifications*Minimum of two years of experience as a genetic counselor, including direct patient counseling in a clinical setting.Experience working across both adult and pediatric patient populations.Experience in cardiovascular genetics, including inherited cardiomyopathies, arrhythmia syndromes, and other heritable cardiovascular disorders. Prior involvement in clinical research, patient registries, or quality improvement initiatives.Proficiency with Epic or other electronic health record systems.Experience developing patient education materials or counseling tools.Active participation in professional genetic counseling or cardiovascular genetics organizations.Modes of Work

Supervision Received

General supervision is received from a physician or other designated official.

Supervision Exercised

Functional supervision may be exercised over students, genetic counselors and support staff.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
