Genetic Counselor I, OnSite
**Job Description** The Genetic Counselor I will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in cancer genetics clinics. **Primary Duties and Responsibilities** Genetic Counselors working under a valid Temporary Genetic Counselor License are permitted to perform the following duties only under direct supervision of a Medical Doctor or fully licensed Genetic Counselor: + Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost. + Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork. + Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician. + May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling. + Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support. + Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients. + Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled. + Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s). + Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary. + Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. + Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field. **Qualifications** **Requirements:** + New graduates are welcome to apply. 0–2 years of experience in genetic counseling is acceptable. + Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program is **preferred** . **Certification:** + Must hold a **full or temporary Genetic Counseling license** in California. + **ABGC Certification** (American Board of Genetic Counseling) required. + **ABMG Certified Counselors** (prior to 1991) may also be considered.
