Job Description

The Genetic Counselor I will provide genetic counseling following established genetic counseling practice guidelines in a variety of settings including cancer genetics clinic, prenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, cardiovascular clinic, neurology clinic, and other settings as appropriate.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Genetic Counselors working under a valid Temporary Genetic Counselor License are permitted to perform the following duties only under direct supervision of a Medical Doctor or fully licensed Genetic Counselor:

Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost.Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork.Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician.May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling.Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support.Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients.Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled.Interacts and communicates regular with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s).Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary.Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care.Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field.
QualificationsRequirements:New graduates are welcome to apply. 0–2 years of experience in genetic counseling is acceptable.Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program is preferred.Certification:Must hold a full or temporary Genetic Counseling license in California.ABGC Certification (American Board of Genetic Counseling) required.ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991) may also be considered. Certification is not required if working under a temporary license, in accordance with applicable regulations.Other Qualifications:A combination of academic education, professional training, or relevant work experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties of the position will be considered.
