Job Description:
Genetic counselors function in independent practice under the supervision of the physician leader to provide patient and family counseling, research, coordination of specialized care including lab data, specimen collection, retrieval of data and referrals, consultation with other patient care specialists and referring providers. Provides staff education as needed.

Assesses, plans, and manages medical, psychological and social problems for a specialty patient population. Gathers diagnostic information, evaluates psychosocial and medical history, and interprets clinical/laboratory findings. Counsels patients and families regarding genetic risks, diagnostic testing, and case management. Communicates clearly with families/patients. Maintains accurate case records with full, accurate and appropriate medical record documentation. Performs medical/literature searches from worldwide databases. Interprets and extrapolates research found in medical literature to clinical applications. Identifies, evaluates, and administers appropriate educational materials in order for patients to understand complex genetic information. Liaisons with health care professionals for inquiries and referrals. Serves as a clinical resource person and effectively shares clinical expertise with medical staff and community. Conducts formal and informal educational programs for physicians, residents, health professionals, and the general community. Designs and implements programs, policies and procedures within the area of human/clinical genetics. Monitors and integrates new genetic technologies, theories, and community resources. Attends continuing education necessary to maintain Certified Genetic Counselor status with the American Board of Genetic Counselling, as applicable. Participates in quality initiatives, including patient satisfaction, patient care, and workflow. Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards. Performs other duties as assigned.
