Insight Globals client is seeking a General Manager to join their team in Chincoteague Island for a direct hire opportunity. Our client is a full-service locally owned and independent grocery store that serves as a valued part of its small community while also welcoming a large number of seasonal visitors.
The General Manager (GM) is responsible for leading all operations of the grocery store and is expected to be present on the sales floor during peak hours. The GM ensures an exceptional shopping experience, operational excellence, and financial success year-round. The role requires a flexible and hands-on leader who can effectively manage store operations, staffing, and inventory to meet the needs of both local residents and the seasonal influx of customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Store Operations
Lead and manage the daily operations of the grocery store to ensure smooth and efficient performance throughout the year.
Set clear expectations for department managers and team members, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
Maintain high standards of store presentation, cleanliness, organization, and safety.
Serve as an engaged, visible leader on the sales floor, building relationships with both loyal local customers and first-time visitors.
Represent the store positively in the local community and actively participate in relevant partnerships or events.
Financial Management & Profitability
Monitor and manage store financial performance including sales, margins, labor, expenses, and shrink
Develop business strategies that support sales growth and profitability across varying levels of customer traffic throughout the year.
Manage inventory and purchasing to ensure appropriate stock levels and minimize waste, adjusting as needed based on seasonal demand patterns.
Collaborate with ownership on budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
Staffing, Training & Development
Lead the hiring, onboarding, and training of store staff, with flexibility to adjust staffing levels in alignment with changing business needs
Build a cohesive team committed to delivering excellent customer service and operational performance.
Provide ongoing coaching and professional development for department managers and employees.
Foster a positive workplace culture that supports staff retention and employee satisfaction.
Customer Experience & Merchandising
Ensure that all customerswhether year-round residents or seasonal visitorsfeel welcome and well served.
Oversee merchandising and promotional execution that reflects both community needs and the preferences of a diverse customer base.
Monitor and respond to customer feedback, ensuring a consistently positive shopping experience.
Adapt product selection and merchandising to highlight local offerings and seasonal opportunities where appropriate.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain a safe and clean environment for both customers and staff.
Promote and reinforce ongoing safety awareness and training within the store.
