General Manager, North Asia

Reuters seeks an experienced newsroom leader with the skills and experience to run editorial operations and manage challenging situations to become our General Manager, North Asia.  

The General Manager, North Asia will work with editors and newsroom managers to support our bureaus in Greater China, Korea and Japan to produce outstanding journalism, meet and exceed client expectations, adapt quickly to new technologies, and do so while ensuring the safety and well-being of our journalists. 

Based in Beijing, the successful candidate will work closely with the teams on the ground and the editorial safety team to navigate a challenging reporting landscape –  securing world-class reporting while safeguarding our teams. 

A strong communicator with a diplomatic touch, the General Manager would manage our relations with the Chinese authorities, as well as with other external stakeholders including the country teams of LSEG, our single-biggest client.

The successful candidate would partner with newsroom leaders across the region and globally to help the bureaus proactively transform and adapt to new tools such as generative AI, to keep these important bureaus at the forefront of journalistic innovation and competitiveness.

This is an important and challenging role, at the heart of some of Reuters most important news bureaus, and it promises significant opportunity for professional growth, in an exciting location. 

About the Role

The General Manager, North Asia will:

Oversee operational aspects of our bureaus in Greater China, Korea and JapanWork closely with editors in translating coverage and business priorities into decisions on hiring and team structurePartner with internal HR, safety, legal, finance and real estate teams on issues related to our teams in the regionPlay a central role on editorial safety issues across the region, and in particular in-person in our mainland China teamChampion innovation in workflows and use of technology, to ensure we free up as much resource as possible to do distinctive reporting

About You

You are a good fit for General Manager, North Asia if you:

Have a proven track record in effectively managing editorial teams or in overseeing editorial operationsBring experience in managing complex stakeholder relationships, including senior leaders and externallyTrack record of delivering change in the newsroom and comfortable delivering difficult messages Have effectively managed reporting in challenging situationsDemonstrate aptitude for or experience in integrating new technologies into newsroomsBring a strong commitment to equity and fairness when dealing with staffMandarin Chinese, or Japanese, language skills a plus
