A General Laborer / Driver-in-Training is responsible for safely and efficiently supporting daily operations at a hauling company, transfer station, materials recycling facility (MRF), or landfill. This hands-on role includes tasks such as yard clean-up, fueling vehicles and equipment, assisting with vehicle operation and maintenance, and general site upkeep—all while gaining experience and training toward becoming a licensed DZ Truck Driver.
Key Responsibilities:Perform yard clean-up and general site maintenance.
Fuel vehicles and equipment.
Clean tracks and maintain heavy equipment.
Conduct yard work, including mowing, trimming, and litter pick-up.
Operate general site vehicles and equipment such as water trucks, pickup trucks, mowers, sweepers, etc.
Adhere to company and government safety policies and procedures.
Carry out minor office maintenance and janitorial duties.
Direct traffic on site when necessary.
Assist licensed drivers with inspections, loading/unloading, and route preparation.
Participate in the company’s DZ License Training Program, including classroom and practical driving components.
Perform other duties as required or assigned by management.
Requirements:High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.
Interest in obtaining a DZ license and pursuing a driving career.
Valid G-class license with clean driving record is an asset.
Must be able to meet safety-sensitive function standards according to company policy.
Willingness to learn and grow within the company.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to read, write, do basic math, and communicate effectively.
Ability to take direction and work independently.
Mechanical aptitude and interest in vehicle operations.
Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Motivation to complete DZ licensing requirements and develop driving skills.
Physical/Mental Demands:Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift in outdoor environments 90% of the time.
Must be able to kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and maintain balance.
Visual ability including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Able to lift/move up to 65 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Working Conditions:Regular exposure to noise, humidity, extreme weather, chemicals, fumes, and moving equipment.
Work performed primarily outdoors.
Occasional work at heights or in high-traffic areas.
Fast-paced, loud, and physically demanding environment.
