The Higher Education Affordability Project at the Center for New York City Affairs is seeking a skilled marketing and communications student to work for our award-winning website at Understandingfafsa.org. The website and email newsletter are focused on helping first-generation students and college access counselors understand and navigate our nation’s complicated and confusing financial aid process. We work closely with students and counselors to design, craft, and test materials with the goal of making college financial aid easy to understand.
This is an ideal position for a student with a passion for web publishing, social media and/or journalism who is interested in helping families navigate the financial aid system, avoid too much college debt, and get as much free money for college as possible.
You will help build the website’s audience and impact by working on new product development, developing social media promotional strategies, and crafting the publication’s search engine optimization (SEO) strategy. This is an ideal position for a student interested in the creator economy, video production, and learning about online media. The ideal candidate will have experience or a keen interest in social media and web marketing.
This work-study position is for 10-15 hours per week with flexibility around the semester schedule. All work and meetings can be remote, though we hope to organize an in-person team meeting occasionally. This is a federal work-study position with the possibility of evolving into a New School student position if grant funding allows.
Work Mode: HybridCompensation: $21/hr

Responsibilities include some or all of the following (depending on abilities & interests): Assist the team with business and promotional operations for the website, including efforts to increase readership and newsletter readership
Help design and manage ongoing social media campaigns
Monitor and report on website and social media “key performance indicators” (KPIs) including web traffic patterns, email growth and social media viewership
Experience using AI to create eye-catching social media design and marketing tools
Minimum Qualifications: Interest in learning all aspects of media management and/or how to succeed in the creator economy. Interest or experience with social media growing a presence online among young people and educators. Excellent design, research, computational and communication skills. Genuine interest in college debt, higher education issues and making college more affordable to all families Full-time New School student with a Federal Work-Study award (ask the financial aid office if you have a work-study award; many students are unaware of this financial aid benefit)
