What you will be doing:

As a Functional Development Engineer you will be part of the Rolls Royce Deutschland Development Engineering Team responsible for the planning, preparation, execution and post-processing of bench tests to support the development and certification of the world’s most advanced business jet aero engines.

You will part of a team that ensures the airworthiness and reliability of engines produced by Rolls-Royce Deutschland and meet the stringent criteria specified by Airworthiness Authorities, Customers & Business requirements.

Tasks and responsibilities:

With an understanding of all customer and regulatory requirements, supports the definiton of validation and verification strategies for whole-engine functionality, including cold starting, rain and hail ingestion, operability, re-lighting and starting with a strong focus on the Engine Control System.

Engages in Integrated Product Teams to influence control system design and ensures that robust associated verification strategies are defined, including evaluation of and integration of EEC (Electronic Engine Control) software packages throughout the EDP (Engine Development Programme) and Flight Test (Back-office).

Evaluates the functional performance of components, sub-systems and engine control software by analysis of test data, inspection of component condition and theoretical predictions. Ensures findings are appropriately recorded and are fed into the product change lifecycle (Problem Reports / Bugs / FRACAS).

Reports the outcome of technical investigations to all levels of internal management and external bodies as necessary, to justify and recommend either revision to engineering policy or service introduction of modifications.  In a certification programme to ensure all the necessary technical documentation and reports for compliance are prepared for submission to the Airworthiness Authorities.

Leads the operation of customer whole-aircraft integration test rigs and acts as interface between customer and internal stakeholders (e.g. Project Management, Control System Engineering)

Contributes to the evolution and integration of the Functional Development Team in the global Rolls Royce organisation

Qualifications and experience:

Educated to degree level qualification in an engineering, scientific or mathematical discipline and be able to work in a dynamic team environment.

Whole engine knowledge, particularly Control System/Software and/or Performance along with an understanding of the product change process and aviation regulations is desirable. Good knowledge of electric systems and Avionic Systems is an asset.

Previous experience in troubleshooting and/or problem resolution using data analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python is mandatory.

Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels.

Willingness to travel internationally (up to 20%), work in a shift pattern when required to support engine tests and provide on-call support beyond usual office hours occasionally.
