Free People is seeking a temporary Assistant Designer whose primary responsibility is to support the design and development of private label product for the Lounge category. This includes assisting the Assistant Design Director with market and in-house developments, with a strong focus on sewing, draping, and executing new ideas. The role also supports the monthly design process and preparation for key meetings and presentations in collaboration with the larger design team.
Role Responsibilities
Support the design process and overall workload for Free People's Lounge category, contributing to the creation, development, and execution of private label product aligned with the Intimates customer.
Assist with sketching and concept development using Procreate and/or Adobe programs (Illustrator, Photoshop), as well as AI platforms like MidJourney to enhance creative research and ideation.
Execute original design concepts and development projects assigned by the Assistant Design Director through sewing, draping, and mocking to bring key ideas to life.
Collaborate across a variety of fabric types and aesthetics, with a strong understanding of knit and woven fabrication, fit, and construction.
Create and maintain spec sheets for private label products, support Designers with product development tasks, and ensure effective communication with cross-functional teams.
Manage weekly fit notes recaps, communicate construction changes to Design Coordinator and Product Development teams, and follow up on significant updates as needed.
Support the creation of design development packs for each delivery, including trim color cards, fabric placement charts, and trim sourcing documents.
Assist with preparation for Sample Review Meetings and Photoshoots by organizing samples, CADing color/prints into sketches or images, and helping build presentation decks.
Conduct research and report on industry trends, color direction, and fabric innovations relevant to the Free People Lounge customer.
Thrive in a fast-paced, agile work environment by providing ongoing support to the Assistant Design Director and collaborating closely with the entire Intimates team, especially leading up to monthly presentations.
Role Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design
Excellent hand and computer sketching skills; proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Procreate
Familiarity with AI tools such as MidJourney or PromeAI is a plus
Strong sewing, draping, and mocking skills are essential
Solid technical design understanding and passion for garment construction; must have experience with both knit and woven fabrications
Highly proactive and self-motivated
Strong organizational and communication skills; able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
1–4 years of relevant industry experience required
Location: On-site, 5 days a week at Navy Yard – Building 25
