Free People is seeking a temporary Assistant Designer for Femme Woven Tops whose primary responsibility is to support the development of the Collection Tops design process, focusing on cut & sew knits and woven fabrications. This role works closely with the Assistant Design Director and Associate Designer to execute original design ideas and support seasonal and monthly development, with a strong emphasis on the Femme Tops category.

 

As a Temp Assistant Designer, you will play a key role throughout the design process—from initial concept to final production—collaborating closely with the Assistant Design Director to bring the Femme Tops collections to life. You will actively contribute to seasonal collections, create craft and embellishment artworks, sew and mock original ideas for key meetings, and assist the team with various design and operational tasks.

Role Responsibilities

 

Translating new ideas for upcoming seasons and presentations through drawing, AI tools, and/or sewing and mocking.

Executing original design ideas via draped and sewn mocks in preparation for key meetings.

Creating original artworks, layouts, and colorways using a combination of traditional techniques (drawing, painting, hand mocking) and digital tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, and AI platforms—ensuring designs remain on-brand, trend-appropriate, and aligned with Free People’s creative direction.

Managing specific design development projects assigned by the Assistant Design Director or Associate Designer, including the preparation and execution of design and artwork packages.

Partnering with Product Development to monitor the status of styles in development daily, ensuring product execution meets design specifications and stays on track.

Assisting with technical sketches for Femme Tops products, setting up spec sheets, supporting developments, and handling follow-up communications as needed.

Maintaining an active role in weekly Design Flow Meetings by taking notes and following up on outstanding issues in coordination with management.

Preparing development packages and participating in related follow-up communications.

Assisting in sample preparation for monthly design meetings by collaborating on innovative presentations that effectively communicate the line to Buyers and Brand leaders.

Performing special tasks as needed.

Role Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design.

Strong sewing skills and a deep understanding of garment construction are essential.

Ability to drape, mock, and sew is a must.

Solid technical design knowledge and passion for garment construction and making.

Excellent hand sketching and computer CAD skills using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Procreate for flat sketches, technical setups, and specs.

AI knowledge/experience is a plus (e.g., MidJourney, PromeAI).

A creative mindset with a passion for unique embellishment techniques and hand-crafted artworks.

Strong understanding of craft and embellishment techniques and artwork creation.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

Proactive, self-motivated, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Detail-oriented and ready to learn, with the ability to follow design direction throughout the creative process.

Collaborative and able to work effectively across cross-functional teams.

Positive, proactive attitude with strong team collaboration skills.

1–4 years of relevant experience.

Location: In office Navy Yard- On-site/ 4-5 days a week Philadelphia, PA
