Welcome to the Santa Maria-Bonita School District website. We are the largest school district in Santa Barbara County with about 17,500 pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade students. Job Description / Essential Elements: PrintBASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform skilled functions and activities in cooking and baking in large quantities; assist in the leading of food service personnel; maintain food service facility in an orderly, safe, and sanitary condition.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Prepare, cook, and bake a variety of baked goods including cakes, cookies, breads, and rolls, vegetables, and a variety of entreesE; review recipes and menus, and estimate needed ingredients and the time required for the cooking and baking of a variety of foods and baked goodsE; lead and provide work direction to food service personnel in the maintenance of the food service facility and equipment in an orderly, clean, safe, and sanitary conditionE; maintain records and prepare reports as requiredE; assist in the receiving, inspecting, wrapping, and storing of foodstuffs, supplies, and materials; assist in the inventory control and in the requisitioning of foodstuffs, supplies, and materials; assist in the training of food service personnel and student assistants as assigned; load and unload foods to other food sites as assigned; perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Methods, procedures, and techniques of cooking and baking in large quantities;
Standard food service appliances and equipment;
Basic arithmetic, recordkeeping, and report development procedures;
Type A lunch and breakfast program requirements;
Nutrition, dietary requirements, and alternative food sources.
Ability to:
Cook and bake in large quantities;
Adhere to large quantity food production and preparation standards;
Lift and transport foodstuffs, materials, and supplies;
Provide work direction to others;
Understand and follow oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above, supplemented by training or coursework in nutrition and in safety and sanitation procedures, and two years of experience in quantity baking, cooking, and food service preparation.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid California Driver's License;
Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
Food service environment;
Subject to heat from ovens, cold from walk-in refrigerators and freezers.
Physical Abilities:
Lift, carry, push, or pull moderately heavy objects;
Standing and walking for extended periods of time;
Hearing and speaking to exchange information;
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate kitchen equipment;
Carrying, pushing or pulling food trays, carts, materials and supplies;
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally;
Seeing to assure proper quantities of food;
Bending at the waist.
Hazards:
Exposure to very hot foods, equipment, and metal objects;
Exposure to sharp knives and slicers;
Exposure to cleaning agents and pesticides.
