Air Products is a world-leading industrial gases company, operating a specialist fleet of ADR vehicles to deliver products safely and reliably. We are seeking a proactive and safety-driven HGV Workshop Supervisor to lead our on-site workshop operations.
In this role, you will supervise a team of technicians, ensuring that all Heavy Goods Vehicles, including ADR-equipped units and trailers, are maintained, serviced, and repaired to the highest standards. You will be responsible for compliance with DVSA, ADR, and company safety policies, helping to guarantee that our fleet always operates efficiently and safely. This position offers the unique opportunity to develop expertise in cryogenic vehicle maintenance.
As a workshop supervisor you will lead a team of Maintenance Technicians responsible for performing cryogenic and automotive Routine Maintenance tasks and repairs on a wide range of specialist equipment, including vehicles (ranging from 3500kg–44,000kgs GVW), and trailers.
Maintenance tasks shall be performed to the highest standards and shall conform to the requirements as set by the UK Government “Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency” (DVSA); requirements as per legislation set by the “Health and Safety Executive” agency; plus, additional Air products standards and procedures.
A thorough understanding of the DVSA “Goods Vehicle Inspection Manual” and the “Categorization of Defects manual” is essential.
Accurate completion of appropriate documentation is an essential component for ensuring that Air Products complies with our legal obligations around fleet maintenance and repair activity. The workshop supervisor is responsible for ensuring records of each maintenance task performed, using both traditional paper documentation plus electronic information systems are completed by the team.
Promoting a safety-first culture, you will need the ability to understand and adhere to company Operating Procedures, Method Statements and Risk Assessments is essential; as is the ability to Understand and review Risk Assessments, to ensure the safety of yourself and colleagues. As the supervisor you will also be responsible for the HSE requirements of the vehicle workshop.
What will you do?
Supervise and coordinate workshop activities, ensuring safe and efficient delivery of all maintenance and repair work.
Lead, motivate, and support workshop technicians, providing technical guidance and training where required.
Oversee and plan scheduled servicing, safety inspections, diagnostics, and defect rectification of ADR vehicles and trailers.
Ensure all work complies with DVSA, ADR, PUWER, LOLER, and company standards.
Carry out quality control checks on completed work, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and legally compliant.
Manage job allocation and scheduling to minimise downtime of operational vehicles.
Maintain accurate records of servicing, inspections, and repairs using the company’s maintenance management systems.
Liaise closely with the transport team, drivers, and external suppliers to ensure effective communication and support.
Manage stock levels, order parts, and control workshop consumables.
Support safety initiatives, audits, and continuous improvement projects within the fleet maintenance function.
Leading toolbox talks and safety briefings.
Liaise with the Fleet operations and site manager to ensure the HSE requirements of the workshop and site are always maintained. In addition, lead and be responsible for the completion of the in house BSP activities for the workshop.
Permit to work issuer for the fleet workshop activities. (full training will be given)
What are we looking for?
Time-served HGV Technician with NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent qualifications in vehicle maintenance and repair.
Previous experience as a Workshop Supervisor, Foreman, or Senior Technician within an HGV/ADR fleet environment.
Strong technical knowledge of HGV systems, diagnostics, and ADR vehicle requirements.
Sound understanding of DVSA regulations, Operator Licence compliance, and safe workshop practices.
Strong understanding of H&S requirements, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH and manual handling regulations
Incident reporting, investigation and root cause analysis.
Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
IT literate with experience using fleet or workshop management software.
Full UK Driving Licence (HGV Class 1 desirable; ADR licence advantageous).
