Duties Description Sample for anadromous fish species including Atlantic sturgeon, Striped bass, American shad, river herring, and American eel in the Hudson River. Process fish in field setting (e.g. length, weight, scale samples, tagging) and laboratory. Enter and check data required for coast wide fisheries management. Maintain instruments and gear for fish sampling. Sampling involves using large nets, seines and electrofishing, and requires strenuous pulling, ability to lift 50 lbs, and maneuverability in/out of boats and around aquatic environments. Experience with data entry, fish handling, and equipment maintenance is preferred. Preferred qualifications include a background in marine fisheries, familiarity with large fishing gears, outboard boat operation, and fish ID/specimen preparation. NYS boating certificate is helpful but not necessary, as certification training can be provided. One position will be filled and is expected to begin on or after 9/1/2025 and will continue beyond 11/30/2025 as long as funding is available. Duration of the position will be discussed at the interview.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
