Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor/Draper, the First Hand/Stitcher is responsible for assisting in cutting and patterning, making costumes, and conducting fittings for Theatre and Dance activities. A typical 14-week semester includes three mainstage productions, three studio productions, and class-based and student-led performance projects.   

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with measurements, costume construction, fittings, and alterations.

Execute the cutting of costume patterns, stitching work, costume craftwork, fabric dyeing/painting, and other fabrication activities as needed.

Assist and direct student workers in garment construction and stitching work.

Pull costumes from the stockroom as directed.

Work proactively and cooperatively with other technical teams to ensure production success.

Attend technical and dress rehearsals and performances as scheduled, including evenings and weekends.

Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for student designers and student technical workers.

Provide progress updates as needed on production related projects/tasks.

Ensure the costumes and equipment are properly prepared and secure.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Minimum one year of professional experience as a stitcher/cutter in a costume environment.

Working knowledge of costume construction related disciplines including flat patterning, draping, cutting, costume fitting procedures and etiquette, alteration techniques, machine sewing (industrial and domestic), hand sewing, and safe use and maintenance of costume shop machinery.

Working knowledge of costume history, period garment construction, and costume construction materials such as fabrics, interfacing, closures, and other notions.

Valid driver’s license.

Ability to lift 30 lbs.

Experience, ability and commitment to creating a working environment that is supportive, open, and respectful.

PREFERRED:

Experience with costume crafts, dyeing/painting, and millinery tools and methods.

Experience in an educational production environment with a student mentorship component.

General understanding of current best health and safety practices within the US Theatre Industry.

Salary Range

$50,012.04-$57,149.09 Annually
