Firefighter Crew Chief
Overview ***This position will be physically located on Ascension Island in support of AFCAP*** As a Firefighter Crew Chief, you will supervise an assigned structural or aircraft rescue firefighting crew on a rotating shift, overseeing emergency response, daily operations, and maintenance readiness. Operating under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Operations, you are responsible for leading your team in executing fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical response duties across a diverse operational environment. This role is part of a full-spectrum Fire & Emergency Services program supporting an ICAO Category 8 airfield on Ascension Island. The position requires strict adherence to the Performance Work Statement (PWS), U.S. Air Force AFI 32-2001, and NFPA standards, ensuring mission continuity at this strategically critical U.S. Space Force installation. Responsibilities Reports to the Assistant Chief of Operations and functions under their direct supervision. Supervises an assigned structural and/or aircraft rescue firefighting crew to ensure compliance with the Performance Work Statement (PWS), applicable regulations, and local operating procedures. Assigns, directs, and evaluates the work of subordinate firefighters and emergency responders to meet operational objectives. Ensures timely submittal of Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRLs), operational deliverables, and work product reports as required by the PWS. Coordinates and ensures scheduling of inspections, testing, and maintenance for fire protection systems and equipment to maintain full compliance. Leads incident operations during structural, aircraft, and hazardous materials emergencies; directs fire attack, rescue, salvage, overhaul, ventilation, and confinement strategies. Performs emergency medical care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed. Preserves evidence at fire scenes and assists in investigations when required. Maintains accurate and timely documentation of station logs, incident reports, inspections, drills, and equipment maintenance activities. Maintains detailed knowledge of the installation layout, facility infrastructure, and fire protection systems. Develops and updates aircraft and facility pre-fire plans when outdated or required. Conducts operator maintenance and readiness checks on tools, equipment, SCBAs, PPE, ladders, ropes, and other assigned apparatus. Enforces respiratory protection program standards and ensures all equipment is serviceable and compliant with mandated inspection cycles. Delivers and participates in scheduled training programs in alignment with the Fire Chief’s Annual Training Plan and Assistant Chief directives. Serves as Incident Commander when first to arrive at an emergency scene until relieved by a higher-ranking officer. Makes critical decisions to minimize loss of life, environmental impact, and property damage during emergencies. Directs deployment of firefighting resources, crew placement, and strategic incident scene actions. Leads rescue operations in accordance with NFPA, DoD, and departmental protocols. Responds to hazardous materials incidents and leads Operations Level actions to contain, control, and isolate the hazard. Ensures access to and maintenance of reference materials including NFPA standards, IFSTA manuals, and departmental lesson plans. Reviews and contributes to the development and revision of operational, training, and communications work instructions. Performs other duties as assigned or directed by the Assistant Chief of Operations or Fire Chief. Qualifications Education / Certifications: One year of related experience may be substituted for one year of education if a degree is required. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be capable of passing an annual firefighter occupational health exam and SCBA fit testing in accordance with NFPA 1582 and NFPA 1583. Must possess and maintain the following IFSAC or ProBoard certifications: Firefighter I Firefighter II Airport Firefighter Driver/Operator – ARFF Driver/Operator – Pumper Driver/Operator – Mobile Water Supply Hazardous Materials Awareness Hazardous Materials Operations Hazardous Materials Incident Commander Fire Officer I and II Fire Instructor I and II Fire Inspector I and II Must possess and maintain National Registry Emergency Medical Responder (NREMR) certification. A valid National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be accepted in lieu of NREMR. Must hold current CPR certification from either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Experience: Minimum of seven (5) years of operational firefighting experience in both structural and aircraft rescue environments. Demonstrated ability to manage resources, lead emergency operations, and enforce fire protection standards. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently to ensure compliance with technical standards, reporting, and training requirements. Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working in an international, military, or U.S. Government contracting environment. Three (3) years of experience as a Firefighter Crew Chief. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and fire department reporting systems.
