The Sprinkler Plan Reviewer will work from a home-office location and be assigned a state vehicle. The position-holder must reside within a 25 mile radius of the territory assigned within 6 months of hire** . This position exists to reduce fire loss and damage through the plan review and inspection of fire protection systems. This is intended to ensure the proper installation and operational readiness of fire protection systems. This position works closely with fire protection contractors, design professionals (architects and engineers), and state and local code officials, providing telephone, e-mail, and personal responses to requests for information on fire protection codes and standards. The person in this position will: + Conduct plan reviews of water-based fire protection system installations to determine compliance with the Minnesota State Fire Code, NFPA standards, the Fire Protection Licensing law and rules, and division policies. + Inspect water-based fire protection system installations to ensure operational readiness and determine compliance with approved plans, the Minnesota State Fire Code, NFPA standards, the Fire Protection Licensing law and rules, and division policies. + Provide technical information and installation guidance on water-based fire protection systems to State Fire Marshal Division personnel; fire and building officials; design professionals (architects and engineers); fire protection contractors, designers, and installing personnel; building owners and occupants; and the general public to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and fire protection licensing requirements. + Train, demonstrate, and instruct State Fire Marshal Division personnel; fire and building officials; design professionals (architects and engineers); fire protection contractors, designers, and installing personnel; building owners and occupants; and the general public on the installation and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems to ensure operational readiness and determine compliance with applicable codes, standards, and fire protection licensing requirements. **Minimum Qualifications** 1. Certification as a Fire Inspector I from IFSAC or ProBoard, OR ability to gain certification within one year of employment. 2. Minimum three (3) years experience conducting fire safety inspections, plan review, writing compliance orders, and conducting follow-up inspections OR three (3) years experience in water-based fire protection system design. 3. Knowledge of the fire-related requirements contained in the Minnesota State Fire Code (MSFC), State statutes, Minnesota State Building Code (MSBC), and the ability to apply these requirements effectively. 4. A working knowledge of building construction types, fire-related construction components and design, and the ability to apply appropriate fire code requirements to specific construction types and designs. 5. Knowledge of fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, hydrant, standpipes and alternate systems and the MSFC and NFPA requirements for these systems. 6. Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License. Towing trailers up to a gross vehicle combination weight of 26,000 pounds may also be required. 7. Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. **Preferred Qualifications** 1. Knowledge and three (3) years’ of design experience of fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, fire alarm, hydrant, standpipes and alternate systems and the MSFC and NFPA requirements for these systems. 2. Certification as a Fire Inspector II from IFSAC or ProBoard. 3. Knowledge of fire protection licensing laws and rules and NFPA standards related to fire protection systems. 4. Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimal direct supervision. Organize work activities including water-based fire protection system inspections, follow-ups, and report writing to accomplish the statutory obligation for fire protection systems. 5. Position requires a high degree of problem-solving and decision-making relative to the application of fire protection/safety technologies. 6. Ability to be an educator to encourage timely compliance with facility owners. 7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in a non-confrontational manner to people on a one-to-one basis as well as to large audiences. 8. Ability to learn and use computer based programs to conduct plans review, write correction orders, and reports. 9. Ability to provide consultation on the fire code and develop effective working relationships with professional groups, including building owners, maintenance personnel, architects and design engineers, fire and building service officials, and other state, county, local, and federal agencies. **Physical Requirements** Requires occasionally moving and transporting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others, and moving and transporting light objects frequently.
