Fire Prevention Officer

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Fire Prevention Officer will be responsible to implement and monitor activities related to the fire prevention program. Duties may include conducting fire investigations; safety inspections; monitoring/reviewing new buildings/renovation projects; hot work permit procedures; fire protection equipment shutdown permits; providing training to members of the University community; writing of promotional/safety regulations material; supporting the creation of fire safety plans; addressing inquiries from the University community; and liaising with provincial, federal and municipal agencies and McGill units.


Primary Responsibilities:

Promote and maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, staff and visitors to campus facilities, in conformity with applicable laws, regulations and codes; and develop and implement programs and standards for the protection, safety and security of University property and in all University activities.

Deliver or support the delivery of security, fire prevention and environmental/ occupational health services to a faculty/department/unit in situations where there are a variety of practices and precedents.

Troubleshoot, assess and resolve problems using specialized skills and technical knowledge.

Provide advice to unit members on problem resolution. When appropriate, inform supervisor.

Develop and implement procedures and/or controls to enhance the operation of the unit and provide administrative direction regarding the unit's goals and objectives.

Participate in the development and implementation of new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the department/unit by keeping abreast of new developments and trends in the field of security, fire prevention and environmental/occupational health and safety.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Must be flexible to travel to both Macdonald and Downtown Campus. Certificat de Technologie en prevention des incendies (T.P.1.) ou Certificat avance de technologie en prevention des incendies (T.A.P.1.). Keeps current on National Fire Prevention Association Codes and Regulations. Client-focused, with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships with internal employees, government agencies and municipalities. Prior experience reviewing construction projects considered an asset. Composed under pressure and able to take on a leadership role in a fire related situation. Ability to cope effectively with change. Proven planning, organizational and priority-setting skills, and ability to implement multiple projects within tightly prescribed timetables. Ability to work in a PC environment, using MS Office and client server database software. English and French, spoken and written.

Must be available to work and travel between the Downtown and Macdonald campuses.

Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 on a scale of 0-4

Bachelor's Degree 3 Years Related Experience with Bachelor’s Degree /

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $71,890.00 - $89,860.00 - $107,830.00
