Job Description:
Miller Electric is seeking a Finishing Technician to join our team within the Paint Department in our Components Division. This individual will provide technical expertise to support and improve finishing processes within the Paint Department. This role works closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to develop, implement, and troubleshoot operations in a collaborative environment. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills.
Essential Functions:
Serve as the primary contact for all chemicals used in the paint department.
Collaborate with chemical suppliers to ensure consistent product quality, performance, and on-time delivery.
Coordinate product testing and maintain inventory of pretreatment supplies.
Monitor and safely maintain pretreatment and wastewater systems, ensuring accurate digital documentation.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and coordinate equipment repairs.
Oversee cleaning and general maintenance of all system components.
Maintain filter press and clarifier equipment for the wastewater system.
Conduct and document daily testing of paint systems; make necessary adjustments based on results.
Verify and record coating weights for Stage 4 processes.
Lead annual pretreatment system cleaning activities during scheduled shutdowns.
Provide technical support to environmental, maintenance, engineering, and production teams.
Assist with paint quality testing and manage supply orders for designated areas.
Troubleshoot paint line issues and implement effective corrective actions.
Drive improvements in safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
Act as the primary contact for paint process-related alarms and environmental matters.
Oversee daily system startups, including the cure oven, dry-off oven, and pretreatment systems.
Assist with production coverage, including break rotations and vacation coverage.
Support all paint line operations as needed—up to 50% of the role—including but not limited to:
Material handling and supply management
Part inspection and packaging
Workspace cleaning and maintenance
Reporting non-conformances and data entry (Excel, work instruction software)
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
2–5 years of finishing experience preferred but not required.
Strong mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of powder coating, pretreatment, and wastewater systems.
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and quality-conscious.
Effective analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Ability to make sound decisions and accomplish objectives with minimal supervision.
Willingness to become certified in the following:
Respirator training
Lockout/Tag-out
Hazard Communication (Haz-Comm)
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) procedures
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage
Fire extinguisher use
Crane operation
Slings and straps usage
Must successfully pass a pretreatment and wastewater system assessment before completing the probationary period.
Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment with minimal training.
Must be able to stand for 8–12 hours and lift up to 50 lbs.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Willingness to work overtime and cross-train in other roles as needed.
