The shop and classroom buildings are located approximately one mile west of the main MSU campus at the Bozeman Agricultural Research and Teaching (BART) Farm.
This well-respected school runs three sessions per year to ~36 students instilling proficiency, knowledge, and the skills necessary to perform professional farrier work on all types of horses. The 12-week course is carefully structured with a proven balance of theory and practice. In the classroom, students will learn equine lower limb anatomy and physiology, and key concepts of biomechanics. In the shop, students will connect concepts learned in the classroom with trimming and forging techniques, including the fundamentals of shoe making and how to properly fit the horse’s foot. As students advance through the course, more specialized forging and shoe making will be covered. The course structure and small class size ensure that each student receives individual instruction tailored to their skill level and learning style.
This position will provide critical administrative support to the farrier school and will work with students, staff, and external stakeholders. We therefore seek a passionate, enthusiastic, and energetic individual to join us to help oversee our farrier program. Duties and Responsibilities Applications: Process all applications and deposits. Keep track of the class list (up to 12 students per session). Update applications annually. Send out confirmation letters to students. Tuition Payments: Accept applications and deposits to reserve student slots. Collect additional tuition payments. Send payment reminders as needed. Information Contact: Act as the first point of contact for prospective students regarding the Farrier School. Handle calls and emails, answering questions about tuition payments and providing general information. Share contact details for those needing dorm rooms (coordination handled by Student Housing). Provide information about payment plans and potential grants. Veterans Administration: Reapply for the VA program annually and update any program changes with the VA. Submit requested VA reports. Meet with VA representatives for audits and meetings. Submit GI Bill veterans’ applications via Enrollment Manager for tuition payment processing. Liaison with MSU Student Housing: Inform Student Housing about upcoming students needing accommodations. Reach out to students who have not contacted Student Housing as session dates approach. Address any housing-related issues involving Farrier School students. Certificates: Print final certificates for students who successfully complete the program. Maintain records and electronic copies of signed certificates. Social Media: Create and manage content for the website and all social media platforms for the Farrier School. Provide updates and advertise the program. Short Courses/Certification:Assist the Farrier School Director in organizing, advertising, and running short courses and certification programs. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience in providing administrative support. Experience with customer service support. Basic computational experience (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe, or similar), including formatting professional documents. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Experience working with and assisting students. Website / social media application design and maintenance. Data collection, maintenance, and basic analysis ability. The Successful Candidate Will Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to articulate detailed information and policies and procedures, both verbally and in writing to a wide variety of constituents. Organize and prioritize multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability with close attention to detail, while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor. Have the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations and records appropriately. Possess the ability to troubleshoot problems and have candid conversations.
