DIVISION DIRECTOR/ACADEMIC TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

RANK/TITLE: Academic Transfusion Medicine Apheresis Assistant Professor (up to 5 years of experience) or Associate Professor (6-10 years of experience) or Professor; M.D./D.O. with Transfusion Medicine fellowship and Board certification.

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Pathology, Division Director of Transfusion Medicine in the Section of Laboratory Medicine, and Director, Vitalant Centralized Reference Transfusion Services. All Divisions in the University of Pittsburgh’s Section of Laboratory Medicine have a strong interest in service, research, and education, and serve the UPMC Health System and other hospitals in Western Pennsylvania. Vitalant is the largest independent blood provider in the U.S. and its Reference Transfusion Service provides centralized transfusion services to more than 27 hospitals in Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia, and Chicago.

JOB DUTIES: Including but not limited to:

· Direct the Division of Transfusion Medicine that includes 6 or more other clinical specialists

· Work with the Executive Vice-Chair for Laboratory Medicine to provide medical direction to the clinical laboratories with the matrix of the Department and UPMC

· Provide technical directorship of the transfusion and apheresis services to ensure regulatory compliance and quality patient test results

· Provide on-call attending responsibilities including clinical consultations for physicians, staff, and healthcare providers regarding test results and interpretations

· Actively participate in Divisional educational activities

· Pursue clinical/translational research

· Liaison with the Vascular Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh

· Develop and deliver educational content for medical students, residents, fellows, and laboratory staff within formal rotations, elective teaching, informal teaching, and mentoring settings

· Provide medical leadership and oversight to Vitalant’s Centralized Reference and Transfusion Services Laboratories in more than 27 facilities across Western Pennsylvania, Northern West Virginia, and Chicago for both UPMC and non-UPMC hospitals.

· Oversee the Director of Vitalant Therapeutic Apheresis and Centralized Transfusion Services in Chicago

· Assist in the oversight of therapeutic apheresis activities in both Western Pennsylvania and Chicago

· Fulfill the role and responsibilities required as the primary CLIA Medical Director in five hospital locations in Western Pennsylvania / Northern West Virginia

· Serve on key UPMC committees related to the practice of Transfusion Medicine and Transfusion Committees at selected Vitalant Centralized Reference and Transfusion Service facilities in Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Experience working in a large hospital-based transfusion and apheresis service that provides technical directorship in general and specialized transfusion service, including cutting-edge LDT and testing developments in transfusion and management of coagulopathies

· Expertise in laboratory quality management to ensure the total testing phase (pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases) is appropriate and standardized across the healthcare system

· Expertise in Informatics and its clinical application in Pathology is desirable

· Proven academic track record with publications is required; a history of current holding

· Must have an M.D. or D.O. with board certification in Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology

o Board certification in Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology or Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology is required

o Eligibility for medical licensure in Pennsylvania and West Virginia is required

SALARY and BENEFITS:

Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. The individual will be a full-time faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, as well as a participant in the UPMC/UPP faculty practice plan.

If extramurally funded research program is present or to be developed, appropriate transition or seed funding, space and resources are available.
