Your Responsibilities
As a Factory Automation Engineer for John Deere Waterloo Works located in Waterloo, IA you will:
• Lead the design and update of electrical systems, schematics, and programming for machines and shop floor equipment, including HMIs and PLCs.
• Maintain effective communication between shop-floor tools, PLC controls, SCADA systems, and MES.
• Execute complex controls engineering tasks, coordinating with cross-functional teams, external professionals, and contractors.
• Provide timely support during production downtime to minimize impacts on manufacturing and maintenance.
• Support the integration and networking of shop floor machines and equipment with site MES and PLC systems.
• Keep thorough documentation of engineering designs and processes to ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Identify and implement opportunities for process enhancements.
• Collaborate effectively with teams, communicating project progress, challenges, and technical needs.

What Skills You Need
• Possess a degree or relevant experience in Electrical, Controls, or Computer Engineering; proficient in PLC and computer programming, including SQL and various engineering tools.
• Familiar with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) solutions, with hands-on experience in process control, scheduling, and shop floor connectivity.
• Understand basic process controls, including PID control loops and motor control; experienced in commissioning digital and analog measurement devices.
• Knowledgeable in Ethernet and serial network communication protocols; strong oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information and collaborate with team members.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of safety protocols, maintaining high awareness of surroundings, while upholding ethical standards and sound judgment in decision-making.
• Proven ability to work well within electrical teams and project management; skilled in building and maintaining relationships at all organizational levels, with practical listening skills to acknowledge diverse input.
• Capable of prioritizing tasks effectively and performing independently without direct supervision; committed to the company's mission and culture while respecting the contributions of others.
• Familiarity with Microsoft SQL or other database applications (preferred but not required).
• Understanding electrical design principles, relevant codes, standard practices, and engineering tools.
• Demonstrated experience in managing projects effectively, showcasing communication, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
• Skills to work with project team members to resolve issues promptly.
• Intermediate knowledge of robot cells and peripheral devices.
Education
Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:
