External Communications Officer
Ottawa, Ontario Canada- Hybrid
Position Summary
The External Communications Officer is responsible for writing, proofreading, and distributing External Communications content, in addition to conceiving new communication methods and creative approaches. Duties include creating and sharing content, with a heavy emphasis on identifying and crafting stories, on a variety of platforms to educate and inform stakeholders, ensuring clear, concise communications. This role will also entail event, exhibition & sponsorship execution.
Approximately 70% of the role will be focused on Canadian defense communications with 30% focused on broader North America communications.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Story “mining” and generation on Defense growth in Canada and strategic activities
Content generation for key Thales Canada Defense initiatives such as Artic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) and Joint Support Ships (JSS) & Minor Warships and Auxiliary Vessels In-service Support, Night Vision System Modernization, Innovation/AI/Cyber in Defense and other
Indigenous relations communications
North America story development & external communications
Distribution of communications across multiple distribution channels
Canada Defense & North America speech writing
Canadian event, exhibition & sponsorship execution (35+ annually)
Broader North America communications activities as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English or comparable field with a minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant experience
3-5 years of experience in written and oral communications
Ability to work autonomously, without daily supervision
Well organized and able to work on several simultaneous projects, according to priorities to achieve results
Solid business acumen, and express interest in business strategy and goals
Comfortable interacting with various stakeholders to provide communications guidance, while leveraging resources across multi-functional and diverse teams on projects and programs
Comfortable in working in an evolving environment, and capacity to adapt quickly to changing priorities
Project management skills, including the definition of communication plans describing deliverables, target audiences and timelines
Ability to coordinate work with external agencies or suppliers as required
Strong analytical and written skills, be highly organized, and be efficient and effective in a fast-paced multi-platform environment with a variety of projects
Ability to work with colleagues from different countries and cultures, as well as managing requests from multiple stakeholders while remaining aligned with the North America Communications Team
15% domestic travel is required to support regional events

The reference Total Target Compensation(TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between
Total Target Cash (TTC): 63,112.50 - 84,150.00 - 119,268.90 CAD AnnualThis reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills, and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity.
