Executive Editor Manga and Graphix
Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in NYC and requires a minimum of three days a week in the SoHo, NY office.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Executive Editor Manga & Graphix will build and manage a focused list of manga, light novels, manhwa and other content, with direction from the publisher, to fulfill revenue growth for Graphix that ties into Scholastic’s business goals by publishing manga and comics that speak directly to elementary, middle grade, and teen audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Acquire and edit 8-12 titles per year, focusing primarily on manga for a middle-grade audience. Build and manage Scholastic’s line of manga publishing, reporting to the Publisher, Graphix. Publishing goals may extend to include light novels from Japan, manhwa and other content from Asian publishing markets that are suitable for publication in the US. Proactively identify, evaluate, and pursue opportunities for new publishing and development/adaptation of existing IP.

Manage all stages of each title’s print/digital lifecycle, including review of all passes; coordination with production, design, and freelancers (translators, etc.); drafting of copy and metadata; and maintenance of reprints/backlist. Collaborate cross-departmentally with marketing, publicity, sales, sub rights, and others. Work inter-divisionally with Scholastic Reading Events (Book Fairs) to maximize commercial opportunities and meet corporate business goals.

Establish and develop relationships with international publishers, agents, talent, and other partners. Negotiate terms for licensed manga directly with publishers, licensors, and agents.

Collaborate cross-departmentally with marketing, publicity, sales, sub rights, and others. Work with Book Fairs to maximize commercial opportunities and meet corporate business goals.

Attend conferences and trade shows (national/international) and lead internal/external presentations. Travel to Japan yearly to secure content, foster good working relationships, and scout publishing trends.

Qualifications

HOW YOU CAN FIT (Qualifications)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be fluent and able to conduct professional interactions and business in Japanese

Excellent editorial and communication skills

Firm understanding of manga localization process

Deep knowledge of and appreciation for manga, as well as an understanding of the US children’s publishing market

Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail and follow up. Ability to meet deadlines and create and maintain publishing schedules, as well as to prioritize and multi-task across several projects simultaneously

Experience:

• 7+ years editorial experience in publishing manga. Helpful to also have experience in comics and children’s books.

• A deep interest and passion for manga and comics

Education:

• Bachelor of Arts

• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Teams
