OVERVIEW 

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking an Environmental Specialist. This position reports to the Environmental Manager and will be part of a team of experienced environmental professionals.  

The Environmental Specialist will perform a variety of tasks to support and ensure environmental compliance across refinery operations. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to, leading and supporting the development, implementation, and monitoring of programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.  

This position will be based in Robinson, IL and is eligible for relocation. 

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Interprets and/or develops Company environmental policies and guidelines and develops methods and procedures for implementing and assuring conformance; advises appropriate managers and supervisors of the Company’s goals and requirements; provides guidance and technical assistance in organizing and establishing programs and procedures to implement and administer such requirements, including budget inputs. Monitors compliance with these policies in assigned areas and directs related reports and recommendations to appropriate personnel. 

Designs and/or reviews engineering designs and cost estimates for environmental equipment or systems; determines engineering specifications and recommends equipment, as required. 

Identifies and investigates current and developing environmental problems or issues to determine cause and contributory circumstances; initiates steps to prevent recurrences and provides recommendations with appropriate personnel as well as communicating to senior management. 

Keeps abreast of environmental legislation, regulatory agency actions, and international standards as well as related technological and administrative developments; develops/assists with legislative and regulatory impact assessment to ensure an appropriate response by the Company to governmental proposals; submits required reports and obtains various permits as required. 

Develops environmental information, manuals, training material and programs; informs employees of related policies and procedures; conducts appropriate training sessions. 

Represents the Company with appropriate trade associations, industry work groups and regulatory agencies. Serves as technical resource to Government Affairs in contact with elected officials. Maintains a working knowledge of issues and key Industry contacts, directs activities and budgets, and disseminates pertinent information. 

Maintains sufficient professional expertise and proficiency in discipline to achieve Company expectations and perform technical assignments. 

Manage and improve existing environmental compliance programs.   

Prepare required regulatory reports in area of responsibility.   

Provide compliance assistance to other departments within the refinery.   

Review refinery projects for regulatory compliance and potential permitting as needed.   

Review new regulations for potential impacts on the refinery and implement as the regulations are promulgated.   

Work as a member of an Area Team to support day-to-day operation of the refinery in compliance with applicable requirements and company policies.   

Participate in incident investigations and implement corrective actions as required.   

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Minimum (Required) Qualifications: 

High School Diploma or GED required with 10 years of relevant environmental experience in process industry (e.g. refining, midstream, petrochemical or other heavy industrial -or- 

Bachelor's degree in a Health, Environment & Safety-related field with 5 years relevant experience -or- 

Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 2 years of relevant experience. 

Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.  

Must have valid driver’s license.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

SKILLS 

Conceptual knowledge of environmental compliance and regulatory framework. 

Ability to monitor compliance with environmental regulations. 

Ability to develop business acumen and technical knowledge.  

Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations with the ability to communicate impact plans to local leadership for budget development. 

Comprehensive knowledge of facilities and relationships with environmental rules and regulations with the ability to initiate steps that will avoid reoccurrence of environmental problems.  

 PAY AND BENEFITS 

Salary range (or Hourly Rate Range): Grade 11-12 

Retirement: 401k with a company match up to 7% 

Pension: Company funded pension plan up to 11% 

Annual Bonus: Eligible for a company sponsored annual bonus
