Environmental Engineer

THE OPPORTUNITY:
Smurfit Westrock is currently seeking an engineer to join our environmental team in Evadale, TX. This position will report to the Environmental Manager. The Environmental Engineer\u2019s core responsibilities are to enable the mill to meet environmental compliance requirements for pollution prevention while supporting mill goals in safety, production, budget, and customer satisfaction.
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK:
* Help ensure compliance with existing and proposed federal, state, and local rules and regulations
* Interface with regulatory agencies on behalf of the Company or business unit
* Review proposed capital projects to understand and plan for potential environmental implications
* Assist with the development of site environmental goals and monitor key performance metrics
* Support incident reporting, response, and corrective action implementation
* Participate in regulatory and ISO 14001 audits
* Assist operations with troubleshooting environmental-related issues.
* Routinely engage in safety meetings, programs, and mill safety efforts
* Assist in the management of the on-site industrial landfill and contractors
* Assist in the management of the solid waste program and strive to increase beneficial reuse
* Assist the environmental team by reviewing daily reports and addressing issues
* Develop and submit periodic reports after peer or manager review
* Assist with environmental and analytical lab testing
* Help with product stewardship tracking and reporting
* Assist in the management of the mill WWTS
* Assist in managing the New Chemical Review Program
* Assist in environmental training by assigning training, preparing materials, and teaching
* Perform annual document review to ensure procedures and forms are up to date
* Perform and document various mill environmental compliance inspections
* Assist or manage projects in other areas that may include air emissions testing, trials using new equipment or materials, developing new procedures or training materials for any of the environmental compliance areas to improve pollution prevention or operate more efficiently.
* Performs activities and cost-effectively completes projects to assist in meeting mill and department budget goals.
* Approximately every nine weeks, in rotation with other team members, participate in weekend call duty. When on call duty, attend morning meetings at the Mill on weekends and holidays, check reports and operator logs for any issues, provide status reports to Mill personnel via email, and remain on call to respond to emergencies.
* Position may also require up to 10% travel
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
* The ideal candidate will possess a BS degree in an engineering or a science discipline
* This is an entry-level position, but preference will be given to applicants with experience in environmental compliance at a manufacturing facility
* Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, most importantly Excel and Microsoft Word)
* Willing and able to walk and work in an industrial location indoors or outdoors, including walking up and down steps and ladders with all safety equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, earplugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, respirator, high-visibility vest, etc.)
* Eligible to work in the United States
* Excellent work ethic, drive, and persistence
* Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
* Clear, concise, professional, well-developed written and verbal communication skills to effectively interface with team members at all levels of the Company
* Excellent planning, organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
* Ability to be adaptable/flexible in job duties based on business needs
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to assess situations, from both a compliance and business perspective, and make the best recommendation based on the facts
* Interpersonal flexibility and strong customer service orientation
* A self-starter with a strong ability to multitask and manage a variety of tasks/projects simultaneously; able to work autonomously; ability to meet deadlines
* Experience with department budgets and expenditures
* Experience working with an hourly workforce, including organized labor
* Proven ability to work as a team member
