Environment Supervisor (Feature Animation) - Expression of Interest

Position Summary:

Industrial Light & Magic is looking for an Environment Supervisor to join our extraordinary team! The Environment Supervisor works as a hands-on collaborator with the VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, department supervisors and leads to ensure that all delivered shots maintain the group’s exceptional standards. With minimal direction and mentorship from their supervisors, their primary task is to support their leads, artists, and Production to produce outstanding creation of environments for complex shots in industry leading, photo-realistic visual effects films and feature animations.

What You’ll Do:

Manage Clients needs, expectations and aspirations to deliver the highest quality work, on time and to budget 

Be aware of the impact creative decisions have on a show's schedule & budget, and be willing to change the creative choices, when possible, to stay on schedule budget

Foster a respectful and cooperative dynamic within the team

Empower team members to collaborate inclusively and build community and a sense of belonging

Serve as a role model and mentor for and within the department

Supervise an environments team towards the creation of published CG environments that meet required visual and technical standards and are delivered on time

Review the work of your team, giving feedback and approving submissions for dailies

Provide technical support for your team, communicating any software issues to the developers

Work closely with other departments to ensure published environments function as required in the pipeline

Work with the lighting department to ensure environments render efficiently and without errors

Work with production to establish milestones and targets, and with the team to ensure targets are met

Attend bidding sessions with production and provide bids for environment work

Work with the CG Supervisor to determine the appropriate skillset and experience levels for the environment team on your project

Work with your local head of department to participate in the supervision and direction of a variety of administrative and personnel decisions and responsibilities including: recruitment, determination of work procedures and priorities, career development, employee morale, performance reviews and conflict resolution

Collaborates with the Talent manager with the employee review process and the scheduling of personnel on shows, providing input on skills, productivity, and career development

Works with the Talent Manager and local HOD on defining the on-going recruitment needs of the department and is involved in the interview process for potential candidates

Work with your global counterparts/head of department to drive the development of tools, standards and processes

Working with Talent Management to mentor potential supervisory up-and-coming talent

Provide clear, concise and timely feedback for colleagues and peers in other departments

Contribute to the documentation for tools and processes, offer feedback to developers

What We’re Looking For:

10+ years of relevant professional VFX experience and a college level diploma in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or photography; OR 12+ years of relevant professional VFX experience in lieu of education

Proven expertise in all CG techniques, including modelling, texturing, shading, lighting, look development, and compositing

Shown artistic ability in a non‐CG field (portfolio of figure or landscape drawing, painting, photography, composition, perspective, lighting etc.)

Demo reel and shot breakdown required

High level of problem solving or creative thinking skills

Extensive knowledge of Matte Painting techniques as well as 3D environment techniques

Expert in the following software:

Photoshop

3ds Max, Maya, Houdini or similar

Vray, RenderMan or similar renderer

Nuke or similar compositing software

Proficient in additional environment tools like Gaea, Terragen, Speedtree, Zbrush, Substance Painter

Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly

Excellent communication and team-oriented thinking

Passion for sharing knowledge, helping others, problem solving

Being curious of new tools and technologies to improve efficiency

Eagerness for improvement, of attention to details and photo realism of your work

Desire to grow with the company

The hiring range for this position in Vancouver is C$156,600 to C$200,600 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
