Environmental Lab Technician

Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Environmental Lab Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing wastewater samples, maintaining lab equipment, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This role is crucial in supporting our environmental initiatives and maintaining our lab's high standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Comply with safety and environmental policies of the mill. As a lab technician –Perform daily lab tasks as per the plan. Daily test includes, but is not limited to, multiple pH, COD, and TSS for WWTP samples collected from various stages of WWTP. Record the test results in mill’s data base system (such as Ekho, PI, tec.) for DMS update.Sample Collection: Collect daily wastewater samples in the mill and weekly upstream/downstream samples. Organizing sampling kits for Daily wastewater Compliance sampling with a completed blank Chain of Custody (COC) form.Routine Environmental testing Sample Analysis: Perform field/bench analysis for temperature, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen.TOC Analysis: Setup and run daily TOC analyzer on collected wastewater samples.TSS and BOD Testing: Prepare TSS sample filters, conduct daily TSS and 5-day BOD tests, and calculate TSS and BOD lbs/day and MTD averages.Lab Maintenance: Maintain lab equipment, calibration logs, chemical inventory, and lab supplies needed for parameter testing.Reagent Preparation: Make-up TOC and BOD GGA reagents as needed.Proficiency Testing: Conduct annual field parameter proficiency tests (PT) for lab certification in NC.Data Entry: Enter daily wastewater data in Proficy Displays, including Environmental Info Sheet and Cond ASB Treatment.EMS/ERT/HazMat: Maintain annual required training, participate in boom deployments, and assist with draining containments.Weekend Duty Rotation: Participate in environmental weekend duty rotation.Hazardous Waste Inspections: Conduct weekly hazardous waste inspectionsCompetencies
Computer Skills – Microsoft office, including Outlook, Word and excel. MS PowerPoint is plus, and basic PI -Ekho skillsKnowledge of SDS, where to locate and how to use itAbility to safely operate lab equipment, follow specific directions, operate power hand tools, understand stated policies and DOT requirement, and other duties as assignedAbility to do basic math calculation on computerExcellent teamwork, cooperation and detailed problem-solving skills
Required Education and Experience
High School Diploma / equivalent with (3) years of experience in supporting chemical handling and hazardous waste management activities in an industrial setupAssociate's degree with coursework in science, biology, chemistry, or environmental field preferredKnowledge of Industry Standards, bacteriology, current lab procedures, and environmental regulatory programsExperience in Pulp and paper is preferred; but not requiredDOT/Hazmat annual trainingProficiency in data entry and lab equipment maintenance. Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
