ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s Southeast Environmental Services team has an immediate need for an Entry Level Environmental Scientist to join our growing practice in Sarasota, Florida. The successful candidate will get to work on a variety of projects across energy, transportation, real estate, and/or local government markets. 

 

Responsibilities

Wetland delineationsProtected species surveysGIS, geodatabases, and basic mapmakingPlant identification and vegetation inventories GPS, mobile technology, and data managementWriting and technical reporting 

Skills & Abilities 

Mapping and data assessment using GISAbility to understand basic engineering plansNavigate using hand-held GPS and engineering plansAbility to identify flora within Florida, using online resources and/or other technical keys/regional references.Technical writing and statistical analysisAbility to travel on short notice, at night, and/or on weekend shifts, and potentially for extended periods of time throughout FloridaAbility to endure harsh outdoor environments in uncomfortable/extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.Excellent attention to detail, team oriented, and flexibleAbility to work independently or in a team.Comfort encountering wildlife while performing fieldwork.Ability to operate or learn to operate vehicles/vessels to access sites (e.g. ATV, small boats, kayaks, and four-wheel drive vehicles).Ability to perform field inspections including climb ladders and stairs, walk on slopes, lift and carry 40 pounds over a distance of up to 100 yards.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

0-1 year of fieldwork experience in natural habitats, whether through coursework, internships or professional experienceBS in a natural science-related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Biology, Zoology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Ecology, Natural Resources)Internship experience preferred.Valid driver's license.
