Summary: The Entomology Specialist will support the Vector Biology Research Program (VBRP) in conducting entomological research related to the transmission of vector-borne diseases across Egypt and partnering countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Jordan, Djibouti, and others. The research focuses on the environmental and ecological aspects of disease vectors, including geographic distribution, species diversity, vector abundance, and detection of pathogens. The specialist will play a critical role in assessing health risks associated with arthropod vectors and guiding evidence-based vector control strategies. The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Collect, identify, and classify vector species with an emphasis on mosquito populations. Analyze vector ecology, behavior, and bionomics in various environments across Africa and the Middle East. Detect and monitor pathogens in vectors, including malaria and other vector-borne diseases. Design and perform insecticide resistance bioassays and evaluate efficacy of vector control interventions. Collaborate with regional research institutes and public health partners. Contribute to scientific reporting, manuscript preparation, and data dissemination. Train junior staff, technicians, and regional partners in vector surveillance and identification methods. Maintain records and databases using Microsoft Office tools; conduct basic statistical analyses for research data. Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of vector ecology, bionomics and classification. Professional level in mosquito identification. Advanced skills in testing for malaria parasites. Professional level in performing insecticide resistance bioassays and other vector control experiments. Excellent working knowledge of computer programs such as Excel, Word and Power Point, and basic knowledge of statistical programs. Minimum Qualifications: PhD Degree in Entomology. At least 10 years in Entomological research. At least 7 years of professional level experience in field entomology, preferably in the African and Middle Eastern regions. Language Proficiency: Level III (as defined by the U.S. Department of State), good command of verbal and written English and Arabic. Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
