The English Writing Tutor will provide academic support to international students enrolled in the Year One Foundation Program at the University of Alberta. This role focuses on tutoring students in English writing skills, helping them develop the proficiency needed to write effectively for academic success.
Main Responsibilities
Reporting to the Program Director of the Year One Foundation Program, the English Writing Tutor will be responsible for
Providing one-on-one and group tutoring sessions for international university students to improve their English writing skills, including academic essays, research papers, lab reports, and other written assignments.
Assisting students in developing their writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, editing, and revising their work.
Collaborating with the Kaplan Student Success team to monitor student progress and provide
feedback on their academic writing development.
Helping students with grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and writing conventions in an academic
context.
Clarifying writing-related challenges in coursework, assignments, and research projects using clear and accessible explanations.
Fostering a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence in writing.
Qualifications & Experience
To be considered for this role, you will need
Currently enrolled in or has completed a degree in English, linguistics, education, or a related field.
Strong proficiency in academic writing, including grammar, style, structure, and the ability to guide students in improving their writing skills.
Prior tutoring or teaching experience, particularly with international students, is preferred.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain writing concepts in a
clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
Patience, adaptability, and a commitment to helping international students succeed academically.
Awareness of language barriers and strategies for supporting students with varying levels of English proficiency.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Location & Availability
This position is based in person at the University of Alberta's North Campus in Edmonton. The successful candidate must be available to start in May 2025 and have afternoon availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As a member of the school team, be responsible for all aspects of our students safeguarding and welfare in conjunction with the wider school and company management teams

About the Year One Foundation Program—University of Alberta The Year One Foundation Program is a new joint educational partnership between Kaplan International Pathways Canada and the University of Alberta, launching in 2025. It provides international students who do not meet direct entry requirements with an opportunity to gain admission to the university after successfully completing a three-term (one academic year) program. The program includes credit-bearing courses taught by university instructors and non-credit classes designed to supplement skill gaps and prepare students for success in their degree studies. Kaplan staff support students from recruitment through to program completion, ensuring a smooth transition into university life.
