Junior High Classroom Teacher - English 7th and 8th grade

Brief Description of Position:

As part of a junior high teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes of English to pupils in grades 7-8.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Teaches content and skills in English language, literature and composition, and reading, to 7th and 8th grade pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education.

2.  Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills and other general elements of the course of study as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

3.  Adapts English material and methods to develop assignments that guide and challenge pupils.

4.  Determines instructional materials designed to achieve instructional goals and behavioral objectives.  Selects among available books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity levels of pupils.

5.  Provides individual and small group instruction when possible in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

6.  Evaluates each pupil's development in course being taught and prepares report cards.

7.  Encourages pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.

8.  Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment during regular class sessions or field trips, assuming appropriate administrative, financial and community support.

9.  Maintains professional competence through participation in self-selected professional growth activities.

10.  Developes lesson plans and appropriate instructional aides.

11.  May plan and coordinate the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals, if applicable. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities: (not to be used as a basis for evaluation unless mutually agreed upon by evaluatee and evaluator.)

Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.

Attempts to communicate with parents and schopol counselors on the individual pupil's progress.

Administers or monitors group tests.

Requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.

Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment on a volunteer basis.  May teach under modular or flexible scheduling plans.

Performs basic attendance accounting as required

Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees on a voluntary basis.

Under the immediate direction of the site administrator.
