About E&ES:
Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES) Division will focus on delivering advanced electrified powertrain, zero-emissions products/technologies, and the solutions and services associated with these technologies. Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries.

Job Summary:
Caterpillar’s Motor and Generator Components team designs and develops multiple voltage and power class motors and generators used in CAT machines and stationary applications. As more CAT products become electrified, there is a growing need to develop a full product line of components to support them. Strong, cross organizational collaboration and technical curiosity will be a must in this fast-paced development environment.
What You Will Do:
The Technical Fellow/Expert – Electric Motors and Generators role will provide strategic direction for a team of engineers to deliver motor and generator designs focused on near term production, supporting existing production components, growing our supply base, and establishing execution excellence.
The Technical Fellow/Expert functions serve as thought leaders, mentors, consultants, and company experts in their focus area of technical expertise. Their decisions and recommendations are recognized as authoritative and have an important impact on extensive engineering activity. The Technical Fellow/Expert is responsible for delivering value to the enterprise by acquiring, developing, applying, and sustaining technical knowledge in their focus area of technical expertise to advance and innovate, product development processes and product designs that enable Caterpillar to meet the end customer’s cost, performance, durability and quality needs. The Technical Fellow/Expert applies their knowledge to Caterpillar’s most challenging technical problems that require understanding and consideration of all elements within the business (e.g. product/process tradeoffs, manufacturability, cost, regulatory requirements, etc.).
This role will focus on setting the strategy and execution of our full line of component offerings, improving each offering through each design phase and shaping the future of how these components are applied across the corporation.
Insulation Systems & Wire, Electro-Mechanical Design & Manufacturing Integration Leadership
Core foundation and technical expertise in the electric insulation & mechanical content of an electric motor and generator.
Technical guidance for magnet wire, resin, epoxy, insulation materials, lamination steel, mechanical interactions between the motor and environment, etc.
Create, maintain and ensure adherence to key motor design guides, Books of Knowledge, etc. across all motor product development.
Define, maintain end enforce proper classification and protection of Caterpillar motor IP including patent applications, trade secrets, etc.
What You Will Have:
Technical Excellence: Extensive experience and knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
L1 & L2 insulation system expertise & guidance; magnet wire, encapsulating resins & VPI process, tapes, papers, sleeving, etc
Expertise with motor/gen durability & endurance, chemical compatibility, thermal mechanical interaction, cooling system tradeoffs and interactions, wire/insulation durability
Development experience (from white paper to production)
Advanced cooling system leadership
Expertise with VPD – strategy, capability development, how & when to use to maximize velocity and minimize R&D
Products and Services: Extensive experience and knowledge of major products and services and product and service groups; ability to apply knowledge of product and service appropriately to diverse situations.
Deep technical knowledge of Electric motor technologies and recognized as motor expert; Electric motor configuration / design expertise
In depth knowledge and experience in product development processes across the product lifecycle (NTI, NPI & CPI)
Effective Communications: Extensive experience and understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
Influencing Through Expertise: Extensive experience and knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.
Product Development in Manufacturing: Working knowledge of methodologies, tools and techniques of product development; ability to design, build and manage manufacturing of new products.
Expertise with multiple motor/gen manufacturing; expertise with SR, Induction and IPM manufacturing – emphasis on manufacturing process stresses that can impact motor life; expertise with SR, Induction and IPM durability – emphasis on design and application stresses that can impact motor life
Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Extensive experience and knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.
L1 physical test leadership, accelerated life test experience with the ability to guide supporting resources to accomplish test activities, experience with standard and non-standard test methods
Magnet characterization and durability testing leadership, production experience with magnetic rotors; retarding grid performance & durability expertise
E-machine validation and experience in traction applications; experience with On or Off Highway, applications, loading and stresses & impact on component designs & E-Drive system optimization
Top candidates will also have:
ePowertrain Systems experience and understanding of component trade-offs and system optimization.
Experience in Supply Chain, Purchasing and Manufacturing Systems
Experience with multiple RI, CI and E&T machine applications
Degree required:
BS or MS Engineering (mechanical, electrical or related) or PhD Engineering with product, component development experience.
Additional Information:
This position is in Mossville, IL and requires 5 day a week on-site availability

Summary Pay Range:
$156,000.00 - $234,000.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
