Engineering Project Lead
To provide technical support for part specific ceramic core production programs. Support includes the procurement and maintenance of tooling, fixtures, and equipment; interpretation of customer specifications; and development of safe, cost efficient processes. Mentor production engineers and improve engineering systems. Has nonconforming product disposition authority within the scope of this job description. + Participate in NPI and Yield improvement teams to leverage best practices for process improvement + Manage die and fixture life to facilitate the timely replacement of worn tooling + Assure tooling and processes comply with corporate best practices as defined in the Core Manual (CP) and Tooling Manual (TM). + Assist in quotation of new products and review design for producibility + Leverage lessons learned in NPI process to production + Draft tooling letters for NPI product including core dies and required support tooling + Have a specific part ownership that consist of NPI/replacement tools/problem jobs. + Improve yield, throughput, and quality of specific parts as assigned + Manage tooling quality, life, and safe handling procedures for large fixtures and product. + Statistical analysis of production dimensional data in order to improve processes + Cost justification and payback of expenditures through the X-order system. + Monitor dimensional and other process parameter trends for control and capability. + Continuous improvement of tooling, methods, and processes. + Review and disposition scrap, define and document product repair / rework procedures + Manage part quality and cost, and improvement activities through Scrap as percent of sales improvement + Develop manufacturing processes that assure conformance to customer specifications + Troubleshooting processes and determining timely decisions for correction + Provide technical support to manufacturing to determine root cause to problems and implement corrective actions + Originate and maintain work instructions, standard work, and standard routing (Q and R) for parts + Communicate customer specification requirements to manufacturing associates + Document HCS production process to comply with corporate specifications PM301, PM302, and PM303. + Improve safe work conditions, and ergonomic robustness of tooling and fixtures. + Improve manufacturing methods to optimize efficiency and lower costs + Continuous improvement of manufacturing systems through application of ABS principles + Regular interaction with casting engineers and OEM in order to address technical problems, improve process capability, and lower cost. + Determine cost, yield, and delivery impact of proposed specification changes. + Control rework, release, and use of customer owned tooling per TM1000 + Understand impact of core on casting process, co-develop improvements with casting engineers + Negotiate reality in customers specifications as required by process capability + Mentor production engineers and engineering techs. + Continuously improve engineering systems through application of ABS principles + Assist in training manufacturing associates + Maintain high attendance record + Perform duties in a safe and efficient manner + Perform other work-related duties as assigned + This position requires the minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or materials engineering + Three (3) to five (5) years of product engineering experience as a minimum. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/EQUIPMENT USED: Good manual dexterity to operate computer equipment. Some lifting and physical exertion is required. Common hand-held measurement instruments (eg calipers and micrometers), endure standing or walking for extended periods. Good eyesight is required to render decisions on physical attributes inherent in the process. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic computer operation (including Microsoft office products, AutoCad) , effective oral and written communications, knowledge of ABS, program management, good statistical analysis skills essential, background in lean manufacturing methods, kaizen, and root cause analysis.
