Who you are:  

SumUp is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager of Payments and Loyalty to join the SumUp team in the Boulder office supporting the Payments & Loyalty Team.  This team owns the card-present payment stack that powers thousands of merchants and a loyalty platform that serves 37 countries. You’ll lead a tight-knit group of 6-8 software engineers and partner with product, compliance and global engineering stakeholders to keep transactions flowing smoothly and securely.

What you’ll do:

Set and communicate the strategic direction for both the US Payments and loyalty domains, providing technical and people leadership Own the full payments & loyalty stack end-to-end—from terminal OS and EMV kernels to our Payments API (PAPI) and consumer loyalty workflows Drive multiple acquirer certifications (Worldpay, TSYS, Fiserv/First Data) and ensure terminal firmware, peripherals and kernels remain compliant and compatible Lead the unification of our US infrastructure with SumUp’s global payments and loyalty platform, collaborating across 37 countries to deliver new features at scale Ship against an aggressive roadmap that includes three near-term certifications and a successful roll-out of loyalty onboarding inside the wider SumUp ecosystem Coach, mentor and grow engineers while fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture. Partner with Product & Design peers to scope work, remove blockers, and prioritise iterations to manage delivery for your team.

Must-have expertise and knowledge to be successful in this role:

Deep knowledge of card-present payment flows (auth, capture, settlement, chargebacks) and experience with gateways, acquirers or processors such as Adyen, Stripe, Worldpay or Fiserv. Hands-on leadership building REST/gRPC payment APIs, microservices and event-driven architectures (Kafka/RabbitMQ/SQS) with high availability and rock-solid idempotency. Observability chops—tracing (OpenTelemetry), logging (ELK) and monitoring (Prometheus/Grafana). Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex projects in a regulated environment. Problem solver with high autonomy that takes ownership and drives to systematic approaches to solutions. Applies systematic approaches to solutions - Breaks down ambiguous problems using structured methods (e.g. 5 Whys, decision trees, trade-off matrices, RACI) to clarify options and drive decisions. Leads in defining, tracking and delivering team commitments (such as OKRs). Ensures domain knowledge is accessible, discoverable, and used across the organisation.

Nice-to-have skills that are not needed but are a bonus:

EMV / PCI-DSS, ISO 8583, ACH, SEPA, SWIFT or FedNow protocol expertise. Product experience that spans Loyalty, POS and Payments. Familiarity with GDPR, TCPA and CASL as they relate to loyalty data and marketing communications.

Compensation: 

$200k-$220k Compensation will be finalized based on the candidate’s experience and location
