This position is accountable for the installation, configuration, monitoring, analysis, maintenance, and technical support of the platform. 

As a principal engineer you will provide...

Communication: Convey complex ideas to non-technical peers and customers. Collaboration: Establish cross-functional relationships with business and technology partnersDevelopment Standards Support: Establish standards for the development team and assist in prompt resolution of development issues. Build and Release: Engineer and manage build and release processes. Vendor Management: Effectively manage technology vendors to meet business objectives. Research and Recommendations: Conduct research and recommend standards, products, and services.  Create whitepapers on engineering topics relevant to larger organization. Architecture: Ensure stable, secure, and compliant application and infrastructure solutions. Security: Implement technologies in line with Information Security principles for sensitive data. Operational Support: Provide high-availability support and automate solutions. Telemetry: Implement deep telemetry for performance metrics. Service Monitoring: Ensure continuous availability and operational continuity. Compliance: Uphold company policies and legal/regulatory requirements (e.g., PCI). Configuration Management: Maintain system configurations and baselines for secure development practices.

Experience: 10-15 years in software development and platform management. Leadership: 5 years leading teams of six or more developers. Technical Leadership: 3 years of technical leadership across multiple platforms. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

System and Network Administration: 9+ years in system and network administration, and systems engineering. Programming Languages: 9+ years in languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, Go, Perl, and/or Ruby. Distributed Systems: 7+ years with large-scale distributed systems. Debugging and Optimization: Proven ability to debug, optimize code, and automate tasks. Design and Troubleshooting: Interest in designing and troubleshooting large-scale systems. Business Insight: Ability to translate technical insights into business recommendations. Application Development: Deep knowledge in development of distributed systems and support. Integration Patterns: Expertise in application integration patterns. Messaging Platforms: Experience with platforms like Software AG Broker, and Nats.io. Cloud Computing: Deep experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud. Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of SOX, PCI, HIPAA, Data Protection, etc. High-Capacity Environments: Experience with high-capacity, redundant, mission-critical environments. Database Technologies: Comfortable with various database technologies, including NoSQL. Networking: Proficiency in TCP/IP networking, architecture, and core technologies. Production Environment: Experience running and maintaining a 24x7 production environment.

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above.  For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.  At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
