Engineer-Gas Storage (Hybrid)

Position Description

The Gas Storage Engineer is responsible for field/well operations of salt caverns and depleted reservoirs used for the underground storage of natural gas.  Knowledge of gas storage wellheads and wellbores including maintenance, risk analysis on assigned gas storage assets, reservoir and salt cavern well integrity related technical support, documentation for PHMSA and the Texas Railroad Commission compliance reporting, development and continuous improvement of reservoir and salt cavern well integrity related programs, systems and applications. The Gas Storage Engineer will report to the Manager of Gas Storage Engineering.

The primary duties of this role are as follows:

Plan and execute requirements of Kinder Morgan’s operating and maintenance procedures for assigned gas storage assets following recommendations from API 1170 and 1171 as applicableInteract with appropriate subject matter experts and other stakeholders to meet deliverability, injectivity, and gas storage reliability requirementsIdentify, prioritize, document and address integrity threatsImplement the Gas Storage risk assessment/threat evaluation, risk ranking, long term assessment planningProvide support to other company groups as needed such as Field Engineering, Operations, Commercial, Gas Control, Corrosion and RegulatoryParticipate in regulatory interactions with PHMSA, TRRC and other State agencies as needed Maintain and strive to continuously improve both new and existing applications and databases such as:Gas Storage DatabaseWell Risk MatrixLogging SchedulesWell Files

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or geological science5+ years of underground natural gas storage or regulated gas industry experience with depleted reservoirs and salt caverns, Texas geologic knowledge preferredProficiency in reservoir engineering and gas storage management practices including, but not limited to, material balance, reservoir and salt cavern performance monitoring and forecastingAbility to analyze reservoir performance, identify issues and recommend solutions to improve field deliverabilityAbility to maintain and continually improve well operationsAbility to understand typical well-logging suitesPractical oilfield and/or storage operations knowledge including downhole well operations, wellbore and wellhead designAbility and willingness to understand and implement all company/job related processes, procedures, guidelines and best practicesAbility to effectively coordinate projects and programs within a defined annual budgetMust be accountable and manage activities to keep required work schedules, focused attention to details, and follow company policies and proceduresAbility to successfully work in a team environment with a focus on both internal and external customers, regulators and emergency respondersStrong focus on safe work practices and active participation in the safety programMaintain a regular, dependable attendance and high level of performanceMust possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurersSubject to PHMSA compliant drug testing program

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge

Knowledge of general underground natural gas storage well operations standards, practices and proceduresKnowledge and understanding of API RP 1170/1171 standardsFundamental knowledge of gas reservoir and salt cavern operations and well integrity threatsUnderstanding of methods utilized for calculating failure pressures and safe pressures on wellhead and wellbore componentsStrong computer skills including but not limited to proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPointStrong effective, timely, clear and concise verbal and written communication skillsDemonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with logical thought processesDemonstrated ability to review, organize, and utilize detailed information*Position may be filled at various levels depending on experience and job skills of successful candidate

 Work conditions:

Must be willing and able to work in a corporate environment in downtown Houston, TexasMay require travel up to 10% depending on needsMust be willing and able to carry a cell phone, laptop, and respond as neededAfter hours work will be required from time to timeExtended periods of sitting may be required
