Black & McDonald is actively seeking a seasoned Engineer 3 with a strong background in electrical utility and communication distribution system design. This role requires a professional who can lead projects from day one, applying deep knowledge of NESC standards and utility owner requirements to the design of existing electric utility and communication infrastructure. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience and the ability to work independently, while also mentoring junior staff and driving project success through technical leadership and collaboration.
WHAT YOU WILL DO IN YOUR ROLE
• Utilize IKE or Katapult field data collection devices to survey and gather information from existing electric utility distribution systems.
• Analyze collected data to assess the feasibility of adding fiber communications using PLS Pole, PLS CADD, and O-Calc or other industry standard tools.
• Design overhead and underground distribution systems to accommodate communication attachments, EV charging stations, and line relocation or extension projects.
• Serve as a technical lead, coordinating the activities of other staff members.
• Perform short circuit, coordination, and arc flash hazard analysis studies, applying relevant safety protocols and concepts.
• Prepare Make Ready Construction Prints, Construction Work Orders, Job Packets, and Summary Bills of Materials.
• Establish and maintain strong client relationships through effective communication.
• Adhere to safety procedures and promote a safe working environment.
• Collaborate effectively within a team setting to ensure project success.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Accumulated four years of progressively responsible post-graduate experience in electrical distribution engineering or a closely related field, applying technical knowledge to utility infrastructure projects.
• Hands-on experience with IKE or Katapult field data collection devices for surveying and documenting existing electric utility distribution systems.
• Proficient in using pole loading analysis software, including O-Calc and PLS Pole/PLS CADD, to evaluate structural capacity and ensure compliance with safety and design standards.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• A valid Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, demonstrating the ability to independently sign off on engineering designs and ensure compliance with regulatory and technical standards.
• Must be willing and able to travel up to 10% within the United States to support field operations, client meetings, or project coordination as needed.
