Position Summary

The Rice University endowment is approximately $8 billion and ranks in the top 20 endowments of private research universities and is critical to the university’s ability to achieve its goals. The annual distribution from the endowment funds nearly half of the university’s annual operating budget which includes providing access to students regardless of ability to pay. The Rice Management Company (RMC) is a division of Rice University and is responsible for asset allocation, the selection and termination of investment managers, monitoring performance of the portfolio, and reporting to the Rice Management Company Board of Directors. 

The Endowment Associate plays a critical role in supporting the data integrity, reporting, and analytics functions of the RMC. The primary role is to ensure that investment data is accurate, accessible, and actionable to support informed decision-making across the investment office. The Associate manages and inputs a high volume of investment transactions and applicable documentation into various systems, completes calculations, and generates regular reporting to the investment and operations teams for related activity. The Endowment Associate supports performance reporting and analysis by collaborating with investment, operations, and finance teams to create reports, build dashboards, maintain records, and analyze portfolio data and trends. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, technically skilled, and intellectually curious with an interest in endowment and institutional investing. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Performance Analytics.

Workplace Requirements

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating that all duties be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range:

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. *Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. 

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree Two or more (2+) years of experience in investment operations, performance reporting, financial data analysis, or a similar role

Skills: 

Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Word and PowerPoint, advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, charts), and intermediate skills with Business Intelligence tools including Power BI, Tableau, or similar Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision Excellent attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy, including repetitive data entry Strong analytical skills and the ability to solve problems by identifying issues, proposing, recommending, and implementing solutions Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to be a collaborative colleague and maintain good relationships within the RMC, the Rice community and external contacts High moral character and the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information appropriately

Preferences

Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field Five or more (5+) years of experience in investment operations, performance reporting, financial data analysis, or a similar role Familiarity with investment concepts, performance measurement, and fund structures Experience with allocator investment software (e.g., Solovis, Addepar, eVestment, Caissa, or similar)

Essential Functions

Responsible for timely and accurate data management for various reporting systems related to investment reporting, incoming communications, financial transactions, and legal documents; generates regular reports as needed daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly Analyzes high volumes of investment transactions to extract and maintain key details for various asset classes, the endowment portfolio, and analysis of potential investments Utilize advanced business intelligence tools, including complex calculations, table calculations, mapping, data blending, and optimization of data extracts to build reports and dashboards Engages cross-functional stakeholders to gather reporting and analytics requirements, then translates those needs into actionable data solutions, including dashboards, reports, and tools, through effective collaboration with internal teams and external partners Responsible for data integrity of reporting software and databases, reconciles and cross-checks input, identifies, analyzes, and evaluates unusual variations, and maintains relevant documentation in electronic format Acts as a key liaison between the investment office and external/internal partners (e.g., investment firms, banks, brokerages, university departments, and vendors) to support communications, transactions, and information management Performs all other duties as assigned 

Additional Functions

Generates applicable banking reports, monitors all account activity, escalates any unusual activity, and maintains all electronic and hard‐copy statements/reports on a daily and monthly basis Works with applicable staff to create and maintain procedures for reporting systems, investment documents, reports system/database organization;, and supports the lead project manager to continually improve related procedures and execute changes Assists with audit support, compliance requests, and board reporting as needed May assist with other duties such as processing invoices, managing department financial transactions, and completing treasury-related duties.
