Emergency Medical Services Program Coordinator/Faculty

Our faculty work closely with students inside and outside of the classroom and serve as advisors to student clubs and more.   Our faculty teach face-to-face, online, hybrid, and hy-flex classes always focusing on student engagement and critical thinking.

Faculty in the EMS Program are highly engaged in clinical simulation and clinical judgment. The College of Southern Maryland is an approved NAEMT training site and our EMS faculty have presented at the Association of Faculties for Advancement of Community College Teaching. Faculty support student success through a focus on individual and group faculty advising, collaboration with the advisory council, and an emphasis on multi-modal teaching to meet students’ diverse learning styles. Faculty approach teaching as a collaborative endeavor built on a foundation of interactional relationships. As such, faculty use adult learning theory to approach their teaching and act as role models and facilitators for students. EMS faculty focus on student engagement and success through critical thinking, analytical and hands-on approaches. EMS faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems in addition to face-to-face and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.  As such, we are seeking an innovative educator to join our Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Program faculty.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The successful faculty member will teach 15 credit hours per semester and 30 credit hours per academic year of day, evening or weekend classes. Flexibility is required to work in this position as teaching assignments may vary from semester to semester.  There is an expectation for summer teaching with this position. Faculty may be assigned to teach on the La Plata campus or any campus or center where CSM offers classes. The faculty member hired in this position is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning and success.  At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and demonstrating a commitment to professional development thorough participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.  

In addition to the above responsibilities, this faculty member may coordinate various aspects of the College of Southern Maryland’s EMS courses, including such activities as mentoring, observing, and evaluating adjunct faculty, and contributions to student learning outcomes assessment processes.

DUTIES AND STANDARDS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:     
Teach 30 credits of courses per contract year in the EMS disciplineTeach a range of courses that may include morning, day, evening, weekend or online, in an accelerated format. There is an expectation for summer teaching with this position.Design assignments that incorporate students’ program of study and connect to the EMS discipline Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approachesMeet with students outside of class to assist them with being successful college studentsIncorporate culturally relevant pedagogies into the teaching and learning processDemonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writingDemonstrated ability to read and interpret informationDemonstrated ability to deliver instruction to diverse student populations, with varied levels of learning and preparation Knowledge and use of student engagement strategies that support completion and student success goalsDemonstrated experience providing feedback students can use to improve their performanceExperience developing or using Open Education Resource (OER) materials as an instructional toolMaintain an ongoing program of professional development and participate in professional organizations, workshops, seminars, conferences and activitiesMastery of appropriate computer operation skillsOperate a motor vehicle for travel to other campuses 

Minimum Education and Training

Degree Required: Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or related health field; Master’s degree preferred.Experience Preferred: Two years full-time teaching experience or four years teaching as adjunct faculty member, preferably at the college level. Related Professional Experience Required: Five years practice in emergency medical services as a paramedicExperience planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating EMS clinical simulation preferredExperience planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating EMS clinical and field activities preferredActive NREMT paramedic certification AND Maryland paramedic license or ability to obtain Maryland licensure within 6 months. Current credentials in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Cardiac Life Support requiredAbility to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation required.Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as MyLearning to support and facilitate instructional delivery required.Ability to teach in face-to-face, virtual, web and web-hybrid formats required.
