Job Summary Job Summary

Teachers at HTH strive to design learning experiences that reflect the HTH design principles of equity, personalization, authentic work, and collaborative design. With support and guidance from their school communities and director, teachers are responsible for designing and facilitating meaningful project work as well as creating and maintaining learning environments where students feel a sense of belonging, cultivate and expand their curiosities and passions, explore their identities and the identities of others, do work that matters, and grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, makers, artists, engineers, interdisciplinary problems solvers, question askers, friends, collaborators, and world changers. Under the general supervision and guidance of the School Director, Teachers are responsible for preparing lesson plans and educating students. Their duties include assigning homework, grading tests, and documenting progress. Teachers must be able to command their classroom and reach students with an engaging project-based curriculum. Teachers are responsible for creating and maintaining a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential and accomplish the learning goals of High Tech High.

Developed by a coalition of San Diego civic leaders and educators, High Tech High (“HTH”) opened in September 2000 as a small public project-based charter school with plans to serve approximately 450 students.  HTH has evolved into an integrated network of sixteen charter schools serving approximately 6,000 students in grades K-12 across four San Diego County campuses (Point Loma, Clairemont, North County, and Chula Vista). The HTH organization also includes a comprehensive adult learning environment including a Teacher Credentialing Program and the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, offering professional development opportunities serving national and international educators.

Description
Elementary teachers, grades K-2, provide multidisciplinary instruction in reading, writing, math, history/culture, science and social-emotional skills.  Elementary teachers foster student growth through personalization, project-based exploration, hands-on application, problem solving and critical thinking.   The HTH elementary classroom cultivates a compassionate learning environment where students are equal and engaged in authentic learning experiences.  HTH embraces the fully Inclusive classroom and teachers work with Inclusion Specialists to support students on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).  

The High Tech High Teacher:

Encourages a culture of mutual respect and equitable practice Exhibits knowledge of student cognitive development and various learning styles Implements the four HTH Design Principles (equity, personalization, authentic work and collaboratve design) Communicates effectively with students and families about classroom activities and student progress Demonstrates content knowledge, including the California Common Core Standards Sets high academic achievement expectations Identifies and supports students’ social, emotional, and behavior learning needs Implements Project-Based Learning techniques and strategies Facilitates and designs effective group work Provides timely feedback and collaborates with faculty to offer specialized support  Fosters student growth through semi-annual Student-Led Conferences (SLC) and Presentations of Learning (POL) Showcases student work within the community Scaffolds instructional activities that facilitate engaging and appropriate learning opportunities Differentiates instruction based on feedback, needs, and learning levels Provides opportunities for student engagement through “Voice and Choice” Creates relevant and authentic learning experiences Implements backward design to align all lessons, activities, and assessments Designs formal and informal assessments that measure student progress
