Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role: Provide global expertise in electrical safety (AC and DC). Lead the analysis, design and execution of risk mitigation initiatives to reduce exposure to electrical hazards throughout the value stream. Serve as subject matter expert for safe management of electricity including but not limited to the handling of energized components across GM electric vehicle product programs. Provide cross-functional technical expertise and support, harmonize product and equipment specifications, develop and maintain standards and training, identify and evaluate personal protective equipment (PPE), and develop safety solutions for our all-electric future.

Customers and Stakeholders:  Global, Regional and Site Workplace Safety Leaders, Site operations leaders, Functional Subject Matter Experts from groups such as Research and Development, Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Environmental, Quality, Customer Care and Aftersales amongst others.

As part of this role, expectations are the following:

Collaborate with customers and stakeholders to successfully execute risk mitigation initiatives addressing electrical safety hazards (AC and DC).

Lead and develop stakeholders and customers, fostering strong partnerships and promoting a safety-first mindset.

Engage with global functional groups and stakeholders to support the development and implementation of common standards.

Lead the harmonization of safety standards and engineering specifications, focusing on risk mitigation methods that reduce electrical safety exposures across all stages of the value stream for both traditional and electric vehicle (EV) programs.

Participate in the development and review of relevant consensus standards, ensuring alignment with industry best practices.

Establish and maintain connections to keep GM informed of relevant technological advancements within the industry.

This global role reports to the EV Occupational Safety Expert Team Manager and has responsibility for alignment, development and implementation of electrical safety work practices and overall risk reduction solutions across the value stream. The person selected will interface across with global stakeholders to ensure consistent execution. Travel may be required for this position.

What You Will Do:

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify electrical safety risks in the early design of DC systems (like rechargeable energy storage systems - RESS) and perform electrical hazard risk assessments to establish proper control methods to reduce exposure.

Monitor the execution of AC and DC Electrical Safety solutions.

Design, develop and support implementation of standards to minimize exposure to electrical hazards as the global electrical safety work practices performance standard champion.

Lead a global network of regional and site champions to share practices and upgrade processes.

Lead the harmonization of safety standards across product, process, equipment and facilities. 

Lead the design of training and educational activities

Collaborate with manufacturing engineering and manufacturing operations to ensure electrical hazards are identified and controlled during the design of manufacturing processes using the Risk tools, and safety standards.

Support engineering, manufacturing, distribution centers, and dealers in the implementation of risk reduction strategies and emerging issues related to battery electrical safety.

Provide technical expertise, coaching, mentoring, and guidance to stakeholders, including engineers, manufacturing leaders, project managers, and dealers.

Perform periodic site visits to ensure attainment of the performance standard requirements and coach site leads and stakeholders in implementation.

Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments in the electrical sector including those developing for electric vehicles and batteries globally.

Your Skills and Abilities:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety and technical leadership role, or equivalent experience in manufacturing engineering or facilities.

Strong technical expertise in both low-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems (AC and DC).

Proven leadership experience in complex manufacturing environments.

Demonstrated ability to perform risk assessments for potential electrical hazards.

Experience with electrical exposures related to lithium-ion batteries is preferred.

Track record of building strong relationships and exhibiting collaborative, decisive, innovative, and visionary leadership.

Strong influencing skills with the ability to engage and align diverse groups.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead and interact effectively at all organizational levels, including global teams.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge:

Master’s Degree or Professional Safety Certification

Multi-cultural experience is preferred.
